Teacher cleared of sex abuse makes peace with her ex

Teacher cleared of sex abuse makes peace with her ex - TODAY People - TODAYshow.com

Craft was acquitted in May of 22 felony counts that, had they been proven, could have sent to her prison for the rest of her life.
When the emotional meeting was over and they informed their lawyers that they had decided to share custody of their children, Craft and Henke stepped in front of the cameras and announced that going forward they would be — as Henke put it at the time — “one big happy family.”

Not only would Henke’s wife, Sarah, be welcome at Craft’s home in Tennessee; Craft’s current husband, David, would be greeted warmly at the Henke household just over the state line in Georgia.
She plans to contiue her lawsuit againt the school... and I hope she kicks their ass in court.

As a teacher I can say I'm scared to death of false accusations concerning this type of thing. We had a teacher here last year falsely accused, his accusers eventually admitted they lied, and that was the end of his career. Naturally, nothing was done with the jr high girls who lied about the situation. Pity.

I taught with a guy who had that happen. girl accused him of "touching her" in his classroom after school. he wasn't even at school the day she said it happened. he was on admin leave for 18 months before she finally admitted she made the whole thing up. mother put her up to it so they could sue the school system. he didn't lose his job, but his reputation was shot. no one will remember that it was all BS...only that he was "that guy accused of molesting a girl"

If you make **** up and it is proven you lied, you should go to jail

This is one of the big reasons I dont want to be a teacher. I dont want some female student getting pissed at me for a low grade and telling the administration I touched her. It's like being called an addict; you cant defend yourself against the accusation and even if you prove it false you cant get rid of the stigma.

Other people have told me "Oh dont worry about it, just make sure you have your door open and are never alone with a student and you'll be fine." I'm not so sure

I don't know about jail........but letting people who falsely accuse anyone of such a deed should expect something to come back on them. I don't think we'll see such a thing tho, at least I haven't yet.

I'm not so sure either, but that's what I do. I don't know how old you are but someday you'll come to the conclusion there are few if any guarantees in life.

bolded: and there you have it. once accused you will always be "that guy who was accused". no one will remember that the charges were dropped a year later because it was total BS.

see my example above. this guy had taken a personal day and was at home on the day he was accused. didn't matter. I testified on his behalf. he had two daughters in pre-school that had to be picked up before 3, he ALWAYS left school before the last bell. my planning period was the last period of the day, so I always covered the last 5 minutes of his class so that he could pick up his girls on time. he was never at school after hours and yet it still took 18 months to clear him.

That was one of the other reasons I got out of teaching. it just wasn't worth the headache and risk any more.

You should be scared. The burden of proof is on the defendant in these kinds of cases. I'm very sympathetic to victims, in general, but these types of cases get tried in the court of public opinion and ruin people's lives (and careers).

As I indicated to hoplite this life brings with it no guarantees. I don't know of a profession that does. I remember crossing the atlantic in a old carrier. We ran into a storm that damaged the ship. It killed two men. I didn't know them but I felt the loss. I also felt the stupidity of it all. We weren't at war. This sort of thing should never have happened, but it did. I've walked away from three situations that I shouldn't have in my time. I shouldn't be here today, but I am. Like that kid with the red hair says in the commercial, "life's random." It certainly is.

Very true. There is no possibility of doing work that needs to be done, and avoiding all risk.
