I would rather turn it into an all you can eat Tex-Mex buffet with legal immigrants on work visas, but that's just me...

I think it depends on the nature of the war. I would hope that both parties would recognize the nature of the threat the DPRK and their Chinese backers pose as well as the importance of a treaty that both parties have historically supported to keep their backers on both sides in line...

You are right. It does depend on the nature of the war. But it also depends on timing. What is possible today will not be possible tomorrow.

Americans have difficulty in seeing anyone other than fellow Americans as their enemies.

I am not disagreeing with that, but Americans of all political stripes need to see that other Americans are not the enemy... those who would take the freedoms that Americans and others enjoy away ARE the enemies... and the last I checked, the DPRK and Chinese Communists were not exactly the biggest proponents of pluralism out there...

A couple of my friends were advised by the Canadian embassy in South Korea to leave. They taught English there for 5 years and now they are packing up and abandoning their lives there. They said people there are very anxious.

I'm afraid that the worst could come true.

Would you want to be involved in the post war occupation of North Korea though? Its fair to say that a substantial section of the population would be brainwashed enough to take arms against those occupying them, judging U.S/UK experience with Iraq and Afganistan our extradionary talent for alienating those we occupy and our reckless disregard for civillian casualities would piss off enough people to turn an even larger section against us and we would be left with Vietnam III (the second being Afganistan)

One only needs look at Afganistan, Afgans had been fighting the Taliban for over a decade when we invaded and but we acheived the incredible and alienated people so much that the insurgents (only some of whom can honestly be called Taliban) now enjoy widespread support. Wanting to bring democracy to Korea is a great idea in theory, its certainly a horrific regime, but it doesnt seam something we,re particually good at.

Taiwan's government hasn't taken that step yet, but is encouraging expats there to monitor the situation, especially if they are in the northern part of South Korea

I doubt any such situation would last very long. 1. South Koreans should (and most likely would) be at the head of such an occupation. and 2. Koreans are not as militant as most Islamic peoples are.

militarily, the US has no competition. why wouldn't they push the arena into that area?

its been said the US would rely on its military more and more, as its economic influence waned. Chomsky coudn't have been more right.
