Republicans block child nutrition bill

So you can't deny, due to conservative policy the government already tells you who you can marry, and what you can smoke :)

Gay marriage is a change to thousands of years of marriage laws, and the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 was passed 392-16. (Hint: there are only 435 members of the House, and the Democrats had a comfortable majority at the time.)

"Conservative policy," indeed.

And the strawman appears.

I was talking about Jim Marrying Bob but clearly your argument sticks

OOOHHH...so you only care about changing laws for certain specific special interest groups...I see. Well...other than the fact it destroys your credibility...stick with that...

Id give them more credit if they actually believed enough in the program to fund it out of their own pockets. Someone writes a newspaper article about a bill none of them knew anything about and suddenly its a fall out of the tree by damn gotta have "for the chiiiildren" important program...

thanks for the link:

Democrats convinced two Republicans in the Senate to support the measure in part by ensuring it would not add to the deficit. That was in part accomplished by cutting food stamp payments beginning in 2014 by $12 billion. The cut would bring funding for the food stamp program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, back to pre-stimulus levels ahead of schedule.

Liberal Democrats say they are committed to restoring the funding, the Hill reports.

"This is a bitter pill to swallow," Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) reportedly said in a statement, noting a spike in participation in the last year. She added, however, that states "desperately need" the $26 billion aid package to save jobs and avoid cuts to essential services.

"As you can imagine, for me personally, it's like 'Sophie's Choice,' " she added.

Lord, I can't wait to live in the liberal wet dream. Where the govt tells me what to eat, what to drink, who to marry, what not to smoke, where I can live, what % of my paycheck I can keep, etc, etc, etc. Then I can be a good little drone and go about my daily life in mindless bliss.

:rofl

Where have you been living? We already have strict regulations regarding all these things - and both sides have their own focus - everything from regulating the content of our foods to people not being allowed to marry.

If that's not strictly regulated living then I don't know what is - been to an airport lately?

Why? Because we 'live in the greatest country on earth' and in this fabulous great #1 country we can't let people starve and be gay - everyone has to eat and be straight or else they'll get the hose, again.
(sarcastic - but it's also true. Our nationalism mindset that came from pride and patriotism is now the backbone behind everything)

If government didn't take it upon their selves to be such heavy regulators - then it wouldn't directly affect me and I wouldn't give a **** what people ate or smoked. Sadly - for the last century - that's just not how we've been.

"Laissez-faire" is very much so *not us*

I'm not sure what it is about. Yes, there is this call to add background checks, which still seems like a separate issue to me. But many seem to be arguing not to have the bill pass either way. So, some consistency would be nice. And do keep in mind, when discussing the Bill with people here who say we should not feed children, then we are talking about feeding children. :coffeepap

No, we are talking about feeding the children three times a day rather than two and adding even more than the 31 million kids that already get free meals.

A large percentage of school kids already qualify for free or reduced fee meals:

1. Any kid from a family that receives food stamps, including any state program.
2. Foster children.
3. Homeless children.
4. Migrant children. Yes, even illegal immigrants.
5. Runaway children.
6. All kids in Head Start or Even Start.
7. Kid in a family of four with an income under $41,000./year.

But, this bill does one very important thing that will undoubtedly save America's children from obesity. It bans bake sales on school property. Yes folks, the time honored method used by bands and other school groups to make money for trips, uniforms, and other needed items will be banned under this bill.

America's children are saved.

i quit teaching summer school when we altered the hours so as to able to qualify for free and reduced lunch

we used to get outta there before noon

now it's like 2:30

and the kids really do throw a lot of that stuff away, it's crap, the "burritos," the "salads," a lot of good milk

i've known teachers who've tried to collect the milk

really

the kids value the cookies, giant chocolate chip

i seem to get a couple pieces of cookie a week, myself

the kids give em to me

they're not bad, what can you do to a chocolate chip cookie

except undercook it, that is

and cookie dough's pretty good, if you're in the mood, i spose

why did obama cut food stamps 26B in order to pump up my plump pension?

are you sure he knows what he's doing?

I for one most assuredly don't think he knows what he's doing.

I'll rescind my view on this entire issue if the Republicans take office and REVERSE the healthcare bill and other things that put government INTO everyone's health-business quite so extensively.

Factually, the person I was speaking to said feeding them at all was not to be done. Period.

But, again, taking what you say above, a new discussion, which kids being added do you object to?

These kids are already being fed free meals. I don't see any point in adding more, but I certainly don't see why a family making over $40,000 a year needs free meals for their kids under the current plan.

we already give 'em welfare, WIC and foodstamps but that isn't enough. we still "need" to feed them 3 free meals a day at school. what the hell?

How can so many of our kids be so fat if they have inadequate "nutrition"....?

Obviously there's more to the problem than the government wants to admit. . .the only way to actually FIX the problem is for them to pick it apart and go case-by-case and figure out WHY these children still need help - after (what yuo pointed out) they already receive a significant amount of support.

Classic answer to "nutrition" issue....as I remember it..
Bill Cosby show, Dr. Huxtable is preparing breakfast for the kids, Claire comes in and gets on his case for giving the kids some leftover cake to eat. She says "make pancakes or something". He asks, "what ingredients are in pancakes?" She told him, and he asks, "what is in cake"? short pause, while she realizes that the ingredients are pretty much the same...

Perhaps that would be the question ask. No, lets add something to the bill because we don't liek the bill (as some have argued), no whining about feeding needy kids, but simply ask that question. There might actually be an answer. Who knows?

You likely know, but one can eat a lot and be malnuorished.

Depends on what they eat, of course, and it is rare that any of us so limit our food choices that it matters.
Few years ago on the medical mystery show some dumb person had such a self restricted diet that she got scurvy, which in todays medical world is extremely rare. She went thru a lot of doctors before one asked her about her diet...

We should have a balanced diet, but that doesn't mean that every meal has to be balanced.

True. But many kids do eat many of the wrong things. This makes them heavy and lacking in some important ways nutritionally.

USDA statistics show the average American diet is significantly lacking in essential minerals needed for energy production and protection from free radical damage as well as other vital functions. Thi is according to statistics from the USDA’s 1994-1996 Continuing Survey of food intakes by individuals and 1994-1996 Diet and Health Knowledge Survey.
