Republicans block child nutrition bill

No, what the school can provide, likely healthy food. How terrible. But you can feed them whatever you want.

tail chasing?

if you choose not to feed them what the free lunch provides it defeats the purpose of spending money on the free lunch program.

let's deny food to hungry kids, eliminate unemployment compensation during a time when jobs are unavailable, object to health care for those without the means to pay, all in the name of fiscal responsibility ... but please, please do not end the tax break for billionaire$
for that we can borrow from the chinese to incur additional debt for the next generation to inherit

they are not opposed, i want to see what's in the bill.

Perhaps, but I'm still not clear as to why it would be atached to this bill.

Also, if this is all republicans need to pass the bill, then they are not really objecting to the bill, right?

Well, inconsistent things get attached to bills all the time. In this case, I see no reason why adding something like this would put Democrats off. It's like saying, "let's feed our children AND keep them safe". Sounds like win-win.

Kind of silly isn't it. I've never understood why "welfare moms" make people more angery than corrporate welfare, or why unemployment benefits are worse than bailing out banks or walstreet, and why we tax tax the rich more, but workers to have less. It all stumps me a bit.

How does that reduce their dependency issues?

It really doesn't. there should be limits to how long you can stay on food stamps. perhaps if they know the tit is going to dry up, they will stop sucking long enough to better themselves. if they don't care enough to do that...**** em, let em starve.

Agreed, but added to the complaints they raised, wouldn't tehy still have those complaints even if democrats accepted the addition? Wouldn't it still be bigger government?

But don't healtier people have more energy? Are they then more able? Just saying . . . :coffeepap

let's deny food to hungry kids

wait a minute. i thought child obesity was the next plague across america?

all the fat kids i see getting off the school busses are hungry?

this is parisan posturing. they might as well have named it the "we love grandmother and America" bill did you hear that republicans hate grandma?!?

eliminate unemployment compensation

yup; that's how you get people back to work. you're welcome.

during a time when jobs are unavailable

jobs are available. the problem is Americans are taught to assume we are owed positions like the one we used to have, and so long as the Government is paying us not to, we see no reason to take a lower-paying one.

object to health care for those without the means to pay

that's called Medicare. and actually conservatives are full of ways to reduce the cost of health insurance to make it more widely accessible. HSA's, for example.

 right. when you start accepting that we have to cut back on entitlements (which is the reality no matter how you slice it), then i'll start taking the claim that you care about the debt seriously.

But don't healtier people have more energy? Are they then more able? Just saying . . . :coffeepap

as the man said; he who will not work, let him not eat.

But don't healtier people have more energy? Are they then more able? Just saying . . . :coffeepap

more active people have more energy too, lets force everyone sucking on the govt tit to exercise daily, maybe by getting off their lazy asses and actually looking for a job instead of sitting around bitching about the evil GOP not wanting to extend unemployment bennies.

it does not stump me. some people are CONSUMED with making sure they get theirs.

Kids need to work? There was a time we believed that, true. Many a ten year old put time in the minds once upon a time. Shoudl we go back to that?

POS dirtbag parents who will not work shouldn't have kids. too many baby daddies out there as it is. the current system just encourages more of them

2 thessalonians 3:10 one of my favorite verses of all time.

I'm more a feed the hungry kind of guy:

Deut. 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.

Lev. 19:19ff. Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.

Prov. 19:17. He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his good deed.

well, just as soon as the lord sees fit to give me some land and some fields and vineyards...I'll get right on that.

But they do. Now what?

we have two choices:

we can either continue the system as it is now until we reach the tipping point and watch it collapse or we can make some hard, tough choices now. better that some people suffer now than all the people suffer later.

And nowhere in any of that does it say it should be mandated by a wasteful governing body.

Christians give charity by the boatloads. We're the last people you should be preaching to. But we know, of that $4 billion, 3/4 of it will never see a kids lunch tray. Otherwise, why with all the earmarks?

what a ridiculous thread. on one hand........some republicans don't want people to buy junk food with foodstamps, but on the other, they don't give a **** what's in school lunches.

That is just not true. This bill expands government in at least 17 different areas, plus allows 501(c)s to get money out of that 4.6 Billion. Why? Why would I want Media Matters involved in my kids lunch program? Why do I need to provide Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Summer food to these kids? Are there not programs already that cover this if the parents are so inept in their duties that they need all three meals provided plus get food stamps?

The bill also increases the roles of kids that qualify for this program, how long before the government just dictates everything you do? ENOUGH!

The school systems in this country are already a shining example of what liberal good intentions do when left to their own devices. Kids are dumber today in the public system than ever before, and it ain't because they had a cheese burger!

:lamo That's rich! A liberal quoting scripture. I guess only when it justifies the means eh?

As I've told j, we are the government. It's just one tool we can use. BTW, I am a Christian. And I have sat in on Christain meeting were conservative Christians have complained that they shouldn't have to give so much to the poor.

And why won't it see the lunch tray. Explain.

As kids? Provided for themselves?

I've held a job since I was ten. I didn't allow my kids to hold a job until they were older. And hold one now and have not been without since they got their first one. Work is good for a person, but holding a job too early can take away from other important things, like their studies, which is also work btw.

Not anymore it isn't....When my son was in HS I can't remember him ever, or at least often having homework.
