WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is rescinding its decision to expand offshore oil exploration into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast because of weaknesses in federal regulation revealed by the BP oil spill, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced on Wednesday.
Mr. Salazar said that drilling would remain under a moratorium for those areas for at least seven years, until stronger safety and environmental standards were in place.

Previously, I could make sense of Obama's actions. This one truly baffles me and I cannot think of a good reason that this route would be pursued. This make me wonder if Obama has the US's interests in mind at all. While this may seem minor to many, and its an industry I don't really care about, this action makes no sense and is screwed up enough to make me VERY strongly consider not voting for him on the next election. (he would have to actually do liberal things between now and the next election for me to even consider it)

So this issue might be a turning point for me, but I have no plans to turn into a foaming mouth hack.

You're just now figuring that out? Everything that Obama has done, to date, has been counterproductive.

Cuba, Mexico and China are or intend to drill in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Strait and Caribbean Sea. Only America has disabled itself. Stupid countries have no business existing. America is becoming very stupid.

If you each take the time to look at everything Obama has done related the economy you will find that each plan the "Trifecta of Doom" Obama Pelosi, Reid, have backed heave been failures and have added to the economic problems.

I have been warning people of Obama's plan from the start, and this is part of it.

Obama promised to raise energy prices and this will help to do that.

If you include the latest phony farm bill with the increases in Fuel prices the inflation that will hit after the first of the year so hard many people are going to experience the poverty and hunger of the third world, and I'm not kidding, one little bit.

Obama will continue to push his agenda until either enough people wake up to put an end to his reign of destruction or he gets his way and we find our way of life is only a memory from the past.

It must be the Soros Open Society at work.

Oh no! In ten years we wont have that extra .8% global oil production!

The countries we don't like are doing it so we should too. Somebody explain that logic to me please.

America can't protect its waters and shorelines from environmental damage from foreign drillers operating in proximity to the American EEZ. So why not drill? Who do you think is more concerned about the American environment...Chinese drillers or American drillers?

America can't stop foreign drillers. So how is Obama going to protect America's environment? Suck up the oil with a straw?

Look at how the past ten years have gone. Frankly, I don't think America has another ten years in its current form.

Much of what this administration has done, has been good to set a careful balance between the private market wealth creation and government necessity to avoid the worst aspect of capitalism. This however, I just can't figure out. I support a temporary ban on gulf oil drilling to give the oil industry time to get their ducks in a row, but this is excessive to the point of insanity. Even after sleeping on it, I am pretty upset about this.

First, its just illogically handicapping as its not like this will stop drilling in the Gulf, it just stops US drilling in the Gulf. So there potential for disaster is still there, only now with no benefit whatsoever from it.

Second, this is devestating upon the economy of Louisiana, and is basically simply built off the backs of using BP to finance that devestation for god knows how long. I don't have a HUGE issue with BP at first paying lost wages, but I can't really support that when the government itself is making those lost wages permanent.

Everything that this government has done, has had the exact opposite effect that we were told it would. This, is just the most glaring example.

So other countries are drilling away, and we have to buy it from them?

Nice job, Obama. Keeping pushing those Volt cars you're so invested in.

But MOOOOM. Everyone ELSE is doing it!

But MOOOOM. Everyone ELSE is doing it!

Wonderful oversimplification exposing your rather desire to engage in juvenile belittling of peoples views rather than an actual discussion.

The reason to not drill off shore supposedly is that apparently our regulations aren't enough to keep the small chance of a catastrophic spill as a near 0 chance. So rather than take a small chance, and get a return for it, the Administration would rather take no chance in exchange for no return.

Which, on the surface, at least seems vague reasonable. Sure, we're missing out on the oil production which is a bonus for us, but in exchange theoritically it should be safer.

However, that would only be true if we lived in a wonderful little bubble where there's no one else in the world but America.

In reality, multiple other countries drill or are planning to drill in the same general area. Many of these countries have even LESS regulations than we do on the industry. Which means even without us there, the chance for a catastrophic spill to affect us is still prevelant.

Which suddenly changes the equation from "Drill and gain SOME positive effect from the gulf oil with a small increase to the total potential danger it presents" OR "Don't drill and gain NO positive effects from the golf oil while still having a relatively similar amount of danger present".

Say you own a business and it would be nice to expand into the vacant lot of trees that is partially owned by you and partially owned by others. By expanding you'd have a benefit to your business with more room, but on the flip side you lose out on the very nice and picturesque area and space around you from the vacant lot. So you have to weigh the benefit of increased business with the cost of loss of aesthetics. Either choice would be a reasonably logical and understandable answer.

However....if 3 other buisnesses that own the other 3/4ths of the lot all begin to build on their lot, bull dozing it, and leaving your lot now looking like a few random tree's then a picturesque spot then what's a logical decision changes. The aesthetics of keeping it is no longer as appealing or tangable, which makes the balance between the gain from building on it and the gain from not building on it sway significantly.

If everyone elses drilling in the golf had 0% chance of affecting us, your juvenile worthless response would possibly actually have some sarcastic meaning behind it. Because we live in reality, where other states actions can have an affect on us, its not as simple as your little MOOOOOOOM retort tries to make it out to be.

But MOOOOM. Everyone ELSE is doing it!

If you mean, "everyone else is putting people to work in the middle of the worst economic down turn in 60 years", then by all means, let's do it.

Obama could unbridle oil and gas exploration and probably drop the unemployment rate a couple of points, not to mention show more tex revenue, so as to fill the depleted government coffers; thereby giving him some serious political clout. Hell, he could even flim-flam his way through saying that the decrease in the unemployment rate is due to the porkulus package.

His failure to take advantage of this political oppurtunity means one of three things, 1) he's a ****ing idiot, or 2) he doesn't rally care about the welfare of the working class, or 3) he's intentionally cocking up the American economy.

Exactly! Let's see how much success Obama has making the Chinese foot the bill, when they blow out a well in the North Cuba Basin.

OK I'll bite. Please explain this one.

The free market can and will kill you to make a dollar. Some sort of authority needs to be in place to curtail that. So, you have to balance that government interference to make sure there's not too much or too little government, as both are harmful.

Will you please explain this statement without the hyperbole. Why do I need an authority to moniter/curtail the free market?

Because the free market is an authority in and of itself. As the addage goes, "its human nature". There needs to be oversight whether its government bureaucrats or ceo's

well, look at his background; he's come from the world of academia, never has he had to face the actual economic results of his preferred policies before. likely it's a question for him of simply which would be mostestest safestest for the environment, and he doesn't really stop to consider the economic implications on the same plane.
