DETROIT (WJBK) - The son of Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., says items were stolen out of the government vehicle he was driving last Wednesday in downtown Detroit, FOX 2's Simon Shaykhet reports.
John Conyers III, 20, told police two Apple MacBooks, valued at $1,100 apiece, and more than $27,000 worth of concert tickets to the Fillmore were stolen out of a burgundy 2010 Cadillac Escalade registered to the 14th Congressional District.
The police report says the vehilce was parked at Brush Street and Congress around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. When Conyers returned around 12:30 a.m., he noticed scratches on the side door and items scattered throughout the interior.
What the hell is Conyers doing with a taxpayer funded Escalade? This **** needs to :stop:, we don't have money for that.

What the hell was his son driving a tax payers car to start with? Was his son elected to office? How much you want to bet he was drinking and driving seeing the late hour and where there car was parked.

So now the taxpayers have to foot the bill of a night out on the town by someone that isnt even a member of congress?

Why do I have the feeling this is business as usual.

It's time for an investigation.
"I don't know of a single person in congress in the 16 years I was there who had to put vehicle titles in the name of the government," former U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg...

According to the U.S. General Services Administration Web site , if an employee allows an unauthorized person to use a government vehicle, that employee could be suspended or fired.

U.S. Rep. John Conyers says he's sorry, will repay government for son's use of congressional vehicle | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

"I have just learned about the inappropriate use of a congressional vehicle by my son over the Thanksgiving holiday," Conyers said in a statement Tuesday. "I am sorry it happened and will make sure that it does not happen again."
Family members are allowed to drive the cars, but only when shuttling representatives to official business, said Kyle Anderson, a spokesman for the House's administrative committee.
The younger Conyers could not be reached for comment. A man who answered the phone at his Detroit home said Conyers wouldn't have any comment.
John Conyers III, 20, had worked in a $15-an-hour part-time job for his mother, Monica Conyers, a Detroit city councilwoman, before she pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges.
Controversy Isn't First Time In Spotlight For U.S. Rep. John Conyers' Son
As the namesake son of a political icon, John Conyers III is no stranger to the spotlight, but much of it has been shining a harsh glare on his parents.
On Tuesday, Conyers' father, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., said in a statement that his son used his government-provided vehicle without permission. He pledged to "make restitution to the treasury for any nonofficial use."
The younger Conyers could not be reached for comment. Staffers in the Detroit lawmaker's congressional office wouldn't answer other questions -- such as how John III got the keys -- beyond releasing the statement.
The statement came after reports that his son filed a police report after someone broke into the Cadillac Escalade late Nov. 24 and stole two computers and 1,000 tickets to a hip-hop concert that he was helping to promote.

Sounds like a kid who took the keys without permission.

Well okie doke. He said he was sorry.

Guess we can put this one behind us..... ;)

Besides attempting to make political hay out of it, what would you do about this?

And I say BS after the record of the father as being a known liar.

My oh my to heavens! Such serious accusations. I await the evidence of a crime which somehow failed to make it in your post.

I would strip him of his Congress plates and demand he turn the car back over to the govt. Make him foot the bill for his own ride if he cannot keep his thug of a son from behind the wheel.

Seeing it runs in the family.

Conyers' Wife Pleads Guilty On Corruption Count
By Zachary Roth - June 26, 2009, 10:50AM
Monica Conyers, the president pro tem of the Detroit city council -- and the wife of Rep. John Conyers, the powerful chair of the US House Judiciary committee -- has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Not interested in hay. And I would suggest they "do" whatever the law/rules say one is supposed to do in response to this particular infraction.

My guess is that Conyer's sharing of his govt vehicle with family members is nothing too uncommon among Congress folks (or federal and state officials in general). Both parties, no partisanship here. Breaking the rules, but they treat it like a "perk".

But I also suspect it is total malarkey that Conyers didn't know the kid was driving the car. The response from Conyer's office just reads like playbook template verbiage to cover his butt.

Conyers has said he will pay for any damages to the vehicle so the Government and the Taxpayers will be made whole. Case closed.

Perhaps you live in a different America than I do Heavy Duty. In the America that I live in the sins or crimes of the son and even the wife are not visited upon the father or any other relative. John Conyers is not his son or his wife. Perhaps the standard is different in Georgia?

Actually the topic at hand is the sin/infraction of the father, not the son....

What's he going to use to pay for it, his govt expense account?

At least there's a standard, unlike the left.

The father took the car when he should not have?!?!?!?

And $27,000 in concert tickets!!!! :lamo:lamo

Unsold tickets to an event he was promoting. Cost to reprint? $20.00. Guess they're planning to make a claim against the government's insurance on the vehicle. Oh, and I don't know about you, but I seldom drive around with two thousand dollar laptops in my car.

And the beat goes on . . .

Here's the next good Obama move... he's already identified a temporary freeze on government workers raises. Now, he should identify no more government expense accounts for government vehicles. All are to be turned in by Jan 2012. You need to go somewhere you use your own car, vehicle, truck, whatever. No expensing limo's or rentals. Use your own money, go buy a vehicle, put that vehicle on your personal insurance and register it to the individual and use it and pay for your own gas, no expensing that either. And no government owned EZ-Pass, those get turned in too.

Wonder how much money that would save? Billions?

What's he going to use to pay for it, his govt expense account?
He better not write a check because not only is he a known liar but also for writing bad checks.

The standard that you wouldn't understand. See down here we live by morals and character. If my son took my car without my permission, I would still be responsible seeing that it's my job as a father to know where my son is at 12:30 if he is still living under my roof and my RESPONIBLITY as a public servant to protect and secure the property they ENTRUSTED to me.

Sorry you wouldn't understand the responsibilities of what it takes to be a good employee to the people whom elected you. I bet if you took your company car home and your son took it and it was broken into your boss would have you standing front and center in his/her office the next day to fire your ass.

I will sleep easier tonight safe in the knowledge that there are truly perfect parents in America.

You can take your assumptions about me and file them in the appropriate place. You do not know me - know nothing of my employment history - and know nothing about how I treat any property entrusted to me.

Maybe you can clarify it then. Were you ever elected and had employees working for you in which any of those employees abused government provided items for their own or their family's own benefit?

When the answer is "No", feel free to stop blathering on about us not knowing you. Otherwise, provide a link to your successful election and explain your personal experiences and empathy with Mr. Conyers.

I do not know what the hell you are talking about. The kid took a car that he should not have taken. The father is paying for the damages and assumes rightful responsibility for it. Case closed.

Unless this is about something else........ which some of you are obviously attempting to make it so. If this were a story wheer the name of John Conyers was changed to the name of John Boehner many who are excoriating Conyers would not so much as utter a tiny peep about it. And you damn well know it but will never admit it.

But I know you will show your partisanship to come to the defense of a man whom is known for being a liar and take him for his word when his track record for lying is long and exposing. Tells us alittle about your character so we do know something about you.
