Wikileaks cables reveal China 'ready to abandon North Korea'

China has signalled its readiness to accept Korean reunification and is privately distancing itself from the North Korean regime, according to leaked US embassy cables that reveal senior Beijing figures regard their official ally as a "spoiled child".

News of the Chinese shift comes at a crucial juncture after the North's artillery bombardment of a South Korean island last week that killed four people and led both sides to threaten war. China has refused to condemn the North Korean action. But today Beijing appeared to bow to US pressure to help bring about a diplomatic solution, calling for "emergency consultations" and inviting a senior North Korean official to Beijing.

This certainly does not surprise me, but I am sure some here would be quite surprised.

That China has, in principle, indicated a willingness to accept a unified Korea albeit with terms to be worked out e.g., no stationing of U.S. forces north of the DMZ (not dissimilar from the USSR's acceptance of a unified Germany with U.S./NATO forces not being stationed in former East Germany), China is not sure about the transition. At the same time, China has interests that would be compromised if the transition were not smooth and peaceful. Hence, China is not likely to support a chaotic demise of the North Korean regime. At the same time, any Chinese disengagement from Kim's regime is likely to be a long, drawn-out affair and perhaps a limited one so as to safeguard China's interests. In short, China almost certainly favors an evolutionary transition, rather than a revolutionary break from the North Korean regime.

Imo China will not tolerate Korean reunification if American troops remain on the Korean Peninsula.

What you fail to realize is that leaders only say things to impress their followers, not their enemies, Ahmadinejad just wants to look strong. Same with Kim Jong, Benjamin Netanyahu, and even Obama.

Bill Clinton said It's far better to be strong and wrong than weak and right.

The surprising part would be that China is ready to, "to accept Korean reunification ", under a capitalist, democratic government.

Runification? Yes. Reunification under anything less than a Communist--or socialist--government? I don't buy it.

Anything less than a dictatorship? maybe not. but the Politburo has become very fond of capitalism over the years. Deng Xiaping, 1980s - "To be rich is glorious."

A couple of things and not the least of which is your statement. Out troops are there as a deterrent to an invasion from the North and once unification is agreed upon there is no need of us to be there any longer.

Next reunification would cost us billions because that's what we do and the people of the North who are not and never were our enemy are staring and have been for years.

Next all this is all based on Diplomatic cables and we have no clue how much of it is real, wild speculation or wishful thinking.

Again I say it's a chance for Obama if he had a brain in his head he'd set up a secret meeting Kim Jong Il and someone other than Hillary and propose unification and allow Kim to take all the credit and being the hero to both North and south and allow his son to have a meaningful job in the Government and fold the North's Government into into the Souths, while either dismantling or reassigning and dispersing all of the Norths service members thinly in to the south's.

The president of the South would remain in office until the next election.

Obama would come off as if he knew something and the result would be everybody wins.

This kind of thing has to be done by someone with great negotiating skills and the ability gain peoples respect and trust.

I know there is a way to accomplish this and it only takes the will, and be able to set aside your ego and let others take the credit.

They've become infatuated with the government making money; not so much with every pee-on on the street making money.

Even in The Soviet Union, there were rich people, who were, "politically correct". Wait! "Politcally correct"...people whom are accepted, politically by the government. That sounds familiar.
