The president of the South would remain in office until the next election.

Obama would come off as if he knew something and the result would be everybody wins.

This kind of thing has to be done by someone with great negotiating skills and the ability gain peoples respect and trust.

I know there is a way to accomplish this and it only takes the will, and be able to set aside your ego and let others take the credit.

That's like telling the Americans and the Taliban that they have alot in common and should really just become friends.

The North views the South as a traitor. There is no way in hell they will just shake hands and be friends.

There's no way the government of the North is going to make friends with the south; but the citizenry of the north would love to have it as good as the south has it.

The real advantage of the situation i believe, would be to strengthen diplomatic relations with china, which is quickly becoming one of the worlds prominent super powers. If the U.S. and China could come to an agreement of how to manage the North Korean government, it would help foster trust between our two governments.

Love these replies that say they're not surprised but then assert that China would insist on an NK reunification even though the OP is all about how China isn't gung-ho for the North Koreans. Keep'm coming.

I don't think anyone's saying that China would insist on a Communist reunification; China itself isn't even Communist any more. What they're saying is that China isn't going to accept a unified Korea as a US client-state, which is an eminently reasonable position for them to adopt. This is still good news, because it means that if China is offered a seat at the table when we figure out what the new Korea is going to look like, they might very well accept it. An alliance between China and the United States is the best possible starting position for a positive outcome.

I imagine even if these were internal communications of the Chinese government some people would still insist the Chinese are actually lying about not wanting to destroy our freedom.

Frankly, I don't buy it. It may be the statements of some officials, but nothing from the politburo or the policies and actions of China's government indicate this whatsoever. Even when the Chinese recently did not veto sanctions against the DPRK, they go ahead and ship more across the "Friendship Bridge" at Dandong...
