A Somali-born teenager attempting to detonate what he believed was a car bomb in a packed downtown Portland Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday night was arrested by authorities, who had spent nearly six months tracking him and setting up a sting operation, officials in Oregon said.

The bomb in a van parked off the Pioneer Courthouse Square was a fake — planted by F.B.I. agents at the culmination of the elaborate sting — but “the threat was very real,” said Arthur Balizan, Special Agent in Charge of the F.B.I. in Oregon, who identified the suspect as Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19-year-old naturalized citizen.

“This defendant’s chilling determination is a stark reminder that there are people — even here in Oregon — who are determined to kill Americans,” Dwight C. Holton, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon said.

According to the affidavit, Mr. Mohamud was in e-mail contact with an unnamed associate in Pakistan in August 2009, who referred him to another an associate overseas. In June 2010, undercover agents F.B.I. first got into contact with Mr. Mohamud, guiding him toward the Friday night event, but asking him repeatedly if he was prepared to commit the act, which would include the murder of children.

“I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured,” Mr. Mohamud said to undercover agents, according to the affidavit.

He referred to the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, calling the destruction “awesome.”

The best thing about these terrorists are that they're stupid, and thank God most of them are. What's interesting is that according to the story, the FBI gave him multiple chances to back out and even let him know women and children will be killed and he had no hesitation it seems. It's also worth noting that this guy isn't a grandmother... but a Muslim by name. (Or is that too un-PC?) I'm wondering how many more such acts will be attempted around the country and isn't it interesting that these attacks (last year the underwear bomber and now this year) are targeting Christmas - whether for maximum crowds or is it a added feature it's also a Christian holiday?

His entire life is probably wracked with parental and induvidual failure. Throw in Middle Eastern Islam and the Lords of Terror have their tool. What makes this an exception is that he became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. Do we know how long he lived in the misery of Somalia amongst the narcotic of blame before being brought here? Did he attend an Islamic private school where his closest guide was a radical Mullah? (You know, the ones that we pretend aren't a threat to Americans.) We need to learn his circumstances, but my guess is that the majority of Americans will choose to either brand him a Muslim and call it a day or pretend he is not a Muslim and bury their heads in the Whoopie Goldberg hole of foolish political correctness.

Far from being a triumph of Islamic extremism on U.S. soil or how we are losing this war (as plenty will spew), this is a triumph for the American law and intel system. Even the worst boxer lands a punch. But the better of the two always prevails.

I think our F.B.I. has been doing a great job lately. It doesn't seem that long ago there were other arrests similar to this one.

If we could only figure out a way to keep them from being radicalized to begin with.
 
Now, has the FBI actually caught anybody who set up a bomb plot on their own? It seems like every one of these arrests is a sting operation where the FBI gave them the "bomb." When it's a young kid like this, I almost wonder if the FBI didn't push them over that last crazy line themselves.

ZOMG, I figured it out. The FBI guys ARE the terrorists because they have all the bombs!! Wait, who is that at the door? :D
 
I can't help but lol at the image of this guy driving his van up to the christmas celebration, steeling himself for the blast, pushing the trigger, opening his eyes and looking around, pushing it a few more times, and then having the door of his van kicked in by Homeland Security.

"Aw mannnnn, this is bull****tttttt!"
 
We need Homeland Security to set up checkpoints at every Christmas tree lighting ceremony in America to prevent future attacks that are exactly the same. They'll need to search the vehicles of every person in attendance, and possibly check the inside of their assholes for explosives as well. Sure, the next terrorist could just try some OTHER tactic somewhere ELSE, but at least there won't be any more terrorists who try to set off car bombs at Christmas tree lighting ceremonies. Sure, it will cost a huge amount of money for practically no security benefit, but we can't put a price on our lives. Amirite? :mrgreen:

Educating people about the greatness of this country, its founding, principles and Constitution throughout the world would be a good start, but hell... we can't get our schools to do that, and the Europeans can't seem to see the truth though we've bailed their asses out for almost a century now, so what chance is there for a society stuck in the 7th century?

They will have to learn the hard way, with the Eurosocialists whining the whole way.

This young man may well have been raised in an atmosphere of hate toward America and that fueled his desire to kill, so what does that tell you some right here on website might be teaching their children with their Blame America first attitude, added to Obama going his world apology tours talking about what an awful place the United states is, and you could be breading home grown bad guys like this one.

If you don't love America don't help Obama try to change it into his idea of a third world utopia just leave.

Hell we even have Janet Napolitano warning us against the very young people in our own military who are fighting and dying for us, in our name. Why?

I think it's because the young people in the military know what Obama and his wrecking crew are up to with their blame America first BS.

Fair enough. I'm against Islam in general, but I just want to make sure he is of that religion. I do not support Islam in the slightest; it's just that I know certain people with such names that are of religions not named Islam. Basically, I'm not 100% sure he is of Islam even with a Muslim name; again, I like being sure of things.

Other parts of the story make it clear that he's a Muslim, but I don't think that's a reason to be against Islam in general.

Yelling "Allahu Akbar!" – Arabic for "God is great!" – Mohamud tried to kick agents and police after he was taken into custody, according to prosecutors

According to the official, Mohamud hatched the plan on his own and without any instruction from a foreign terrorist organization, and he planned the details, including where to park the van for the maximum number of casualties.
The affidavit said Mohamud was warned several times about the seriousness of his plan, that women and children could be killed, and that he could back out, but he told agents: "Since I was 15 I thought about all this;" and "It's gonna be a fireworks show ... a spectacular show."
U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton released federal court documents to The Associated Press and the Oregonian newspaper that show the sting operation began in June after an undercover agent learned that Mohamud had been in regular e-mail contact with an "unindicted associate" in Pakistan's northwest, a frontier region where al-Qaida and Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents are strong. The person Mohamud had been in e-mail contact with was a friend living in Pakistan who had been a student in Oregon in 2007-2008, the official told the AP.
The two used coded language in which the FBI believes Mohamud discussed traveling to Pakistan to prepare for "violent jihad," the documents said.
An undercover agent met with him a month later in Portland, where they "discussed violent jihad," according to the court documents.
As a trial run, Mohamud and agents detonated a bomb in Oregon's backcounry earlier this month.
