DeLay convicted of money laundering charges | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

They finally get the bug man.
AUSTIN – A Travis County jury today found former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay guilty of political money laundering charges relating to a corporate money swap in the 2002 elections.
The verdict came down five years after DeLay was forced to step down as the second most powerful Republican in the U.S. House. The charges also led DeLay to resign from his Sugar Land congressional seat in 2006.

I wonder who his cell mate will be? I hope the gets the max.

Austin, Texas (CNN) -- A Texas jury on Wednesday convicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on charges of illegally funneling corporate money to help elect GOP candidates to the Texas Legislature.

He declined to comment as he left the courthouse Wednesday. His sentencing was set for December 20, and he faces a possible maximum prison term of 99 years on the money laundering charge and 20 years on the conspiracy charge.

Ex-House Leader DeLay Found Guilty in Texas Case

AUSTIN - A Texas jury Wednesday found Tom DeLay, the former House majority leader and architect of the Republican Party’s 1994 takeover of Congress, guilty in a money-laundering trial involving contributions to political campaigns.

Jurors deliberated for 19 hours before they came back with guilty verdicts against Mr. DeLay on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The verdict was the latest chapter in a long legal battle that forced Mr. DeLay to step down. The trial also opened a window on the world of campaign financing in Washington, as jurors heard testimony about large contributions flowing to Mr. DeLay from corporations seeking to influence him and junkets to posh resorts where the congressman would rub shoulders with lobbyists in return for donations.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.:lol::2razz:

And this affects you how? I'll bet you haven't a clue what this case was all about but because it is DeLay you pile on. there will be an appeal and a reversal based upon legal reviews in Houston. I am sure that will warrant another thread from you where you apologize. Right?

He was convicted by a jury of his fellow Texans.

Really? He is going to prison for life? What to place a wager? Attorneys in Houston say this will be reversed on appeal, then what will you say? Further how does this affect you and your family?

In Austin, TX. my question stands. Attorneys in Houston say this will be reversed on appeal as the prosecutors didn't prove their case. We shall see but I await your answer as to how this affects you and your family.

I bet there are lawyers in Nowhere Texas that say the same:roll:

Further how does this affect you and your family?

Well we are going to have to pay for his 3 square plus a cot for the rest of his natural life.

Re: Texas jury convicts Tom DeLay on money laundering charges

No he won't go to prison but this is AWESOME! Anybody who knows the facts in this case can clearly say that Mr. DeLay is an absolutely horrible human being and unfortunately, he'll never get what he truly deserves. This is a good start. I mean, really, this guy is just Satan incarnate. I hope it holds up, great news and something to be thankful for this year!

Why? What did he do that affected you, your family, or the country? "Your" President is doing a lot worse. Attorneys here claim the prosecution didn't make their case thus this will be overturned on appeal. In the overall scope of things, Obama is doing a lot worse than anything DeLay was accused of doing. The most "transparent" Administration in history hasn't been so transparent.

I am pleasantly surprised that a Texas jury would convict a corrupt, rich, white, Republican (but I repeat myself) of something he was clearly guilty of - there is hope for the state yet.

Of course, there remains sentencing, in which DeLay may face the usual consequences of being a Republican criminal: Luxurious retirement, a lucrative talk radio career, and the respect and admiration of all Republican-kind. After all, it's not as though he's some homeless guy who stole a candy bar from a convenience store - that's the kind of thing you really need to get tough on. But maybe justice will be done here too.

If so, then there are appeals, and the overwhelming likelihood that some Bush-appointed judge with bulging pockets will decide that concepts like "fact" and "reality" unduly biased the jury's verdict. Still, I am hopeful.

Then there's the US Supreme Court, which given its recent history is as likely to declare Tom DeLay an American hero worthy of the Medal of Honor as uphold a conviction against him.

But the conviction is meaningful in any case. Twelve Americans rendered a verdict - the word verdict meaning literally "true speak" - that Tom DeLay is a criminal: A fact most informed people knew when he was running the US House of Representatives as a one-party extortion ring.

Texas, I salute you: Decent, responsible citizens are still born there.

Are you saying that when he was convicted of among other things peddling his influence(with the Vice President of the United States ) that it dont effect every American citizen?

Love how someone from Minneapolis is such an expert on something that happened in TX. Wouldn't be any bias on your part, would there be? Charles Rangel, Maxine Waters, Bob Livingston, Tim Geithner ring a bell? What they did was far worse than anything DeLay did. I live in TX by the way.

I love how a carpet bagger from Ohio thinks he is an expert on Texas:roll:

Tell me what affect he had on you based upon this case? Do Maxine Waters, Charles Rangel, and Tim Geithner ring a bell with you? Compare the crimes. I could also add Sheila Jackson Lee along with hundreds of other politicians to the list. You see DeLay with a R after his name and ignore far worse crimes from Democrats.

What exactly did DeLay do that affects you and your family? Obama put people in his Administration with a far worse record and they had and continue to affect Americans a lot more than DeLay. Van Jones, Tim Geithner come to mind but then again I guess if you are a Communist and a tax evader that is a badge of honor in the Democrat Party.

Oh I didn't realize that I was supposed to condemn Charlie Rangel in the Tom DeLay thread. My mistake. And we live in a global world now, haven't you heard? Minnesota and Texas aren't so far apart, after all, we're having a conversation right now aren't we?

You are right, TX is fiscally responsible and hasn't elected a Comedian to the Senate or a former Wrestler to the office of Governor.
