New deepwater drilling permits: Zilch

Actually, even if we were it wouldn't mean much in the short run or in the long one. We simply don't produce enough electronics to make it viable and even if we did it would still take 15 years for us to start seeing some kind of profit.

That sounds like a great reason not to work on it. We could always export, but that wouldn't be useful at all...

Would you agree that making us more reliant on foreign sources for our oil is a national security situation? And if so, why would you tie the hands of those wanting to develop our own sources?

No I would not agree with that as a long term solution, however I think its a better plan to first work out a way to become energy indepedant or at the very least only be required to import energy from friendlier nations. Rather than exploit all our home resources as fast as possible while hoping we can develop the methods and technology in time to keep our home production, figure out how to create it at home first, than start pumping every single drop of oil as fast as we can.

The only way to become energy independent is to aggressively pursue options other than fossil fuels. Drilling as fast as we can wont do it, the math just doesn't work out.

I agree, its act of fantasy to think every drop of proven reserves can be accessed at any given moment and that we have the infrastructure to pump it all at once. Its also a denial of reality to think simply being foreign oil free means being foreign energy free.
