School Makes Boy Take American Flag Off Bike

Most Muslim immigrants I know are extremely patriotic, because they know what it's like to live under an oppressive regime and have found a better lives for themselves here.

I should have been more clear. my opinion was that it was overly PC school boards will assume that muslims might be offended and over-react

Oh, and just for the record. If hispanics are offended by seeing the US flag being waved on cinco de mayo....they should go back to mexico. If you are more proud of being a mexican than you are of being an american...maybe you don't belong in America???? just a thought.

I didn't piss and whine about seeing the Iraqi flag being waved on the 4th of July while I was in Basrah

Washington was a lot of things besides a slave owner. He was a general, a politician, one of the founding fathers, and more. Also, there are plenty of motivations to study his presidency. Anything from intellectual interest to having to cram to take a test to research for a debate and everything in between. I would think that in order to approve of his slave owning, one would have to specifically motivated towards that end, moreso than other legitimite reasons to learn about the guy.

Obviously, I was being sarcastic... as denoted by multiple smilies.

Sometimes when I am in one of my analytical moods, I get bad with the context.

There used to be an America flag in every classroom. How did we ever get here where the American flag can be a no-no anywhere, much less on a kids bike. I think every patriotic kid/parent in that school should put a flag on their cars, bikes and houses.

Every class in my 5th graders school has an American flag.

lol.........

I blame my ADHD. I tend to be all over the place at one moment and hyper focused on something the next.

yeah what was being done with the flag??? the kid had it on his freakin bike. only someone looking to be offended would get pissed about that. and who, given the current political climate, seem to be the people most likely to be looking for things to be offended by...

but you are typical of your kind....anyone who disagrees with you must be a racist, bigot or homophobe. and THAT, my friend, is where your prejudice comes in

Seeing the American flag flying does my heart good. Seeing one flying on a 13 yr old kids bike would bring a smile to my face. When did patriotism become politically incorrect?

Schools have really lost any ability to be reasonable these days. Maybe it's our fault with our endless bitching and lawsuits. But something like not allowing a kid to have an American flag on his bike...that's a bit much. Even for our knee-jerk reactionary society we've produced for ourselves.

How completely absurd. I fail to see the connection between the US flag and racial tensions. It sounds to me like they were looking for an excuse.

about the same time it became politically incorrect to think people who enter this country illegally should be punished and removed, so that people who want to enter legally can have a chance.

yep, a kid who brings an aspirin to school is treated like a drug dealer and fingernail clippers are considered a weapon. One of the many reasons I quit teaching.

My 10 year old is like that... except it's Aspergers and not ADHD for him. Kid's amazing though. top of his class academically. (proud smile)

My kid has a strong anxiety disorder (and probably ADHD too, but its not been diagnosed) and is at least 4 grade levels above his age. Unfortunately, his emotionality is what keeps me from giving the nod to move him up. I know what its like and I can sympathize.

The anxiety comes from his mom's side though.

Wow thanks. it's nice to know the whole country hasn't gone crazy. Kudos to your school.

find me a single black, jew or hispanic that is going to be offended if they see a US flag on the back of some kid's bike. then we can talk.

yeah right. I suppose I am also racist because I would assume that blacks would be the race most likely to be offended by the confederate battle flag?

sad that so many people confuse stating statistical probability with prejudice

Actually, most of the recent issues with offense over the US flag dealt with Mexicans. I believe there was an incident where a school had up a Mexican flag for Cinco de Mayo, and some boys wore flag (our flag) shirts to school. There was at least one other incident that I heard of (unless those were two different incidents).

Anyway, I haven't heard of any Muslims being offended by them lately. It really is Mexicans.

I feel your pain. My sons not that far advanced academically, but he's at the top of where he should be. He's had a lot of support from his old school and his current one (just took custody this year because of his mom recovering from an ilness long term), social skills classes, etc., and scouts really helps him. H'e looking forward to going from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts next year.

Thats all you can do. We do a lot of church activities with our kid so he can be exposed to supportive social situations. It has helped him tremendously. He has even started to get to the point where he stops quizzing people on obscure equations that nobody but him and a few engineers care about and has started accepting people as they are. That is a big step for him. My great hope for him is that he has happy memories of his childhood and they contribute to him being an exemplary adult. I don't worry about his academics since I don't have to. My family usually has one or two weirdo geniuses per generation (the whole clan is far above average though, but some get an extra dose it seems, but often its no blessing) and I guess he is one of them. Hopefully, he will have the same success as his uncle, but better social skills, so hes not some unhappy rich hermit.

Oh, you sound like you're very knowledgable about this school. Tell me, who were the kids involved, and how would you describe their relationships with eachother? What social groups within the school are involved in the situation?

Nobody Gets angry at american flags, when some snot nosed kid puts an american flag up on cinco de mayo as an escalation rather than an innocent flag sitting around... We'll, some of the more culturally aware know what that is.

Also... when you see a truck full of white americans driving up to a group of mexicans, waving their flags like it's more their country than anyone elses, telling them that this is not their country and they should go home, swearing, picking a fight draped in the stars and stripes.... well some of us know what that is too.

DENAIR - 13-year-old Cody Alicea rides with an American flag on the back of his bike. He says he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He's had the flag on his bike for two months but Monday, was asked told to take it down. A school official at Denair Middle School told Cody some students had been complaining about the flag and it was no longer allowed on school property. "In this country we're supposed to be free," said Cody. "And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they're telling me I can't." Cody's grandfather says the school was concerned about racial tensions or uprisings because of the flag. He feels if there was really a problem it should have been brought up two months ago, not during Veterans week. "No action should be taken. We don't want any repercussion," said Roger. "We just want Cody to be proud of what he's doing."

Racial tension? What kind of crap is that? If the American flag creates racial tension we have a far more serious problem in this country.

School Makes Boy Take American Flag Off Bike - KTXL

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! non news, he's flying his flag once again.

This just another case of political correctness run amuck.

If you want to look for the folks who are offended by the American flag, you probably don't have to look any farther than this school's administration.
