Buffalo NY Teachers Spend $9 Million in Taxpayer Cash in '09 on Cosmetic Surgery

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo teachers left taxpayers on the hook for nearly $9 million worth of cosmetic surgery last year, according to the state-appointed authority overseeing public school finances. -- SNIP -- up $8 million over 2004's $1 million tab for cosmetic surgery. The procedures, provided under the teachers' union contract, accounted for 9 percent of the district's total spending on health benefits for employees and retirees.

About 10,000 school employees are eligible for the benefit. District officials said teachers or their dependents accounted for 90 percent of the approximately 500 people who received cosmetic surgery last year -- SNIP -- an average of nearly $18,000 in elective procedures last year per employee who used the benefit.

"We've already told them we're going to give [it] up in these negotiations," Philip Rumore, president of the teacher union, told the newspaper. "We've told everybody it's going to be gone in the next contract."

Board of Education member Christopher Jacobs said the cost increase "smacks of abuse" and is asking the district and the city comptroller to investigate.

"We asked the unions to forgo the cosmetic surgery rider for one year, so we could use the money to reduce the number of layoffs," she told the newspaper. "They weren't interested."

Rumore said the benefit is a negotiated item -- one that his union is willing to give up only as part of contract negotiations, which he expects to begin by the end of the year.

When are we going to wake up and demand accountability from those who negotiate our public employees' benefits and wages? This is outrageous.

Accountability is impossible unless the unions who shelter idiots such as these are held accountable by the State. For this to happen and not cause immediate outrage I think means first, it was initially supressed locally (no proof but just sayin') and second, someone's in the union's pocket and if I use my state as an example, it's the local politicians. So it's all a big scam and the taxpayer again is screwed uncerimoniously. Maybe the people of Buffalo like getting screwed.

Who the hell negotiates cosmetic surgery in an employment contract? This is why Im against public employee unions, unions should be limited to the private sector only however thats in conflict with the First Amendment.

Yes. I am sooo totally against unions for public employees. I've said it before, but it bears repeating. In the private sector, wages and bargaining are tied to profitability. If there's no profits, it certainly precludes REEEdickalous benefits like THIS. In the public sector, our politicians simply say, "Well, guess we'll just have to raise taxes."

Honestly, it seems soooo hopeless. We are scrood.

The question I would raise is how much of that spending on cosmetic surgeries was "boob jobs" and how much of it was "skin grafts after a horrible accident."

The latter I'm ok with. Fox paints it like all of it is the first category. Surprise surprise.

Still, an increase of 800% is pretty insane, so something fishy must be going on.

Surprise surprise, Fox paints it like....

From the story at the link: "...elective procedures such as chemical peels and other skin treatments..."

I could be wrong, but I don't think skin grafts after a horrible accident fall into the category of "elective".

That spending should be directed towards the individual(s) health care insurance plan just as it would with the rest of the population who are not teachers. Any type of spending of this nature whether cosmetic or not, should NEVER be included in contract budget negotiations. Elective or required surgery - doesn't matter, it doesn't belong.

Wow.. Just Wow... You know, even most democrats I know don't like unions. I never understood why Republicans never went after them harder ALL THE TIME? It's not like they're ever going to get any money from their PAC's anyway? Just like welfare reform.. It's not like welfare recipients vote republican?

    Amazes me..

What the hell is wrong with you folks. Skin peels, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, face lifts, etc are required for teachers to look their best.

Don't you know that teachers have to look their best for them to be able to learn your kids anything?

Don't you want the USA to maintain that #1 standing in global scholastic achievement.

Well, to be honest if more teachers got boob jobs I probably would have paid attention more, skipped class less, etc...

Boob jobs. An investment in your child's future!
