To Republicans, as I said. "Hard work" = make your employees work harder while you golf. "Self-sufficiency" = rake in every bit of public subsidy you can, then rail against "socialism" when the people you laid off need help. "Patriotism" = wave the flag and outsource jobs. This is the Republican Party. Nothing American.

My employer doesn't consider anyone valuable - it pays what it's forced to pay by law or market necessity. The difference between a human being and a urinal cake in corporate "America" is that it costs more in legal fees and court settlements to literally piss on a person. If that's your vision of something noble to be emulated in politics and government, then I don't know what planet your sense of right and wrong comes from.

Capitalism is a tool, not a religion. For any tool to be beneficial requires that it be (a)built properly, and (b)used properly. So I would say that a much higher top marginal income and capital gains tax rate is called for, in addition to rigorous estate taxes, and these would be used to fund the reconstruction of American infrastructure and investments in forward-looking industries. Otherwise the market just shifts around entropy, breaking up the floor beneath your feet for scrap. It's totally unsustainable, and endangers more than our economic well-being.

Plenty of Republicans come from humble roots - what makes them contemptible is that they want to burn the bridges behind them.

My toothache is just an example. The point is that the narcissism of right-wing ideology treats human beings like objects, and says that the pettiest whim of a person with money is more important than the very life of someone without. And I call that out for the fascist madness it is: It's inhuman and un-American.

Yes, actually it does - the top rate cuts being allowed to expire were all single-digit, and the rate before the cuts was about half of what was paid in the fifty years prior to the Reagan administration.

You seem to be having trouble with the concept of "can't afford." It seems like the idea only exists in Republican cosmology when the subject is public spending.

When was it ever law that budget surpluses would be dedicated to Social Security and/or Medicare?

The necessary result of tolerating dissent in a political party is that it happens. You will never, under any conceivable circumstances, find a sizable minority of Republicans advocating an increase in top income or capital gains tax rates: The world would end before they would bite the hand that feeds them. If the rate were 0, the proposed rate 0.0001%, and the fate of the universe resting on their assent, they would lie down on the floor of the Senate or House in a fetal position clutching wads of cash to their chests and await the Apocalypse muttering a prayer to Ayn Rand.
