GOP 'Pledge' makes closing argument to voters

If I were elected, I'd have the national debt back to $0 by the end of my first term.

What's that? You want me to explain how? I'm going to do it by restoring fiscal responsibility to the American government.

What do you mean, "that's not an answer?" I'm not going to play "gotcha" games with the press. Thank you for your time, and God Bless America.

gee whiz! Who controlled Congress when we had a balanced budget?? I'll give you a hint; it wasn't the Dems.

:rofl

When Pres. Clinton held office (1992-1996/1996-2000), he had a Democratic majority in both chambers of Congress from 1992-1995, exactly 3 yrs. From 1995 until 2007, Republicans held Congress. Now, granted, when Clinton left office he did hand his predecessor a balanced budget. To that, I will give credit where credit is due and make the bold statement that this might have come at the hands of having a Republican Congress, but look at how they did it...

Republicans didn't necessarily cut meaningless spending or anything like that although they did pickup where Democrats left off in cutting waste in Medicaid & Medicare. However, with Newt Gingrinch's help, Republicans effectively shut down Washington DC for nearly two months (mid-Nov 1995-early Jan 1996). Why? Because Newt threw a hissy fit for having to sit at the back of AF1...whaaa!!! Oh, then in 1997 the Balanced Budget Act was passed stipulating that the budget had to be balanced by 2002. Clinton somehow managed to do it before he left office in 2000. Exactly how he did it...I'll leave that debate up to economist. Admittedly, that kind of stuff makes my head hurt and my eye cross. :stars:

Can you explain to me how the debt grew every year of the Clinton Administration with a balanced budget?

I'm not just singling out the GOP when I say this, but why would anyone believe lofty campaign promises anymore? Haven't people had enough of being lied to by transparently power-grabbing parties and their relentless sycophants?

I swear... the first party to actually be honest about what they can and cannot do will probably win the next Presidential election.

Well that's absolutely true. Don't think for a second I believe these bums. I think what they say is a good first step. If they live up to it is a whole other story. The deal here is though, there's a political movement that will be very harsh on the existing GOP members if they don't start living up to their promises - it's called the Tea Party. The influence there could very well run these bums out if they're just playing the same Washington games. There's no such entity with the Democrats so, the GOP members are marked men for government unemployment. They're very motivated I think, to start living up to their pledge.

I like the Tea Party optimism.

"We will be really harsh on Republicans who don't live up to their promises!"

Peh! What are they going to do? Vote Democrat?

The Tea Party is primarily composed of the Religious Right. They will be fine if the Republicans go on spending sprees as long as they don't let gays in the military or the federal government fund abortion. Sure, they won't be happy, and they will whine, but as long as some of the issues they care about are being served, they could actually care less about the rest.

If the Tea Party base really cared about fiscal issues, then they would be running fiscal Democrats just as hard as they are running fiscal Republicans. Like always, it comes down to the social issues. Which in reality, are usually nonissues.

The only thing they can do, put them out of a job with someone who may uphold the core of Conservatism.

Please provide evidence of this.

Go tell Murkowski that... I'm sure she'd be amused.

Every Republican politician runs on the platform that they represent the core of conservatism. Tell me how that has worked out so far?

Please provide evidence of this.

from article said:
This summer, a Gallup poll found that 8 out of ten self-identified Tea Partiers were also Republican and that there was “significant overlap” between the two groups. Earlier this year, a New York Times/CBS poll found that only 16 percent of Tea Partiers thought gay couples should be allowed to marry, compared to 39 percent of overall respondents. More than half of Tea Partiers (53 percent) disapproved of Roe v. Wade, compared to 34 percent of all respondents.

Go tell Murkowski that... I'm sure she'd be amused.

She got replaced by an ardent prolifer, even in cases of rape and incest. That guarantees that even if he goes back on every other promise, he will have the support of the right.

What surprises me -- well it doesn't surprise me that much -- is that the Tea Party is only sponsoring REPUBLICAN candidates. How about a Libertarian? Or an Independent? Or a Bluedog candidate (conservative Democrat)?

The Tea Party has shown me where their allegiance lies... to the Republican party, not just to fiscal conservatives.

Which party has the honor of owning 9% unemployment?

Which party has the honor of owning 9% unemployment?

Yes, which party has trillion dollar deficits the past two years for the first time in history? Which party has had higher unemployment each month of 2010 vs. 2009? Obama supporters are running from his record and we all can see why.

Which party has the honor of owning 9% unemployment?

Both. One for 10 years of leadership that lead to a recession and another that has acted slowly in bringing about new growth to the economy since it has ended.

Which party has given Congress it's lowest approval rating in history? Which party has pissed off sooooooo many Americans, that they started a whole new political movement in this country?

Which party is going to get it's ass handed to it between now and 2012?

You weren't crying about defiicits until Obama took power. Stop making yourself a hypocrite.

Funny. A major political movement from America's anger lost the Republicans their place in 2008 and now a major political movement is on the verge of making the Democrats lose their position. America has gotten awfully good at being angry, but still only has two really bad choices.

Do liberals ever take responsibility for anything. Democrats have controlled Congress for the last four years and as good as liberals believe they are, I find it amazing that you would not expect more than you are getting. The recession ended last June and yet this year unemployment is higher each month than it was last year. In addition economic growth is 1.6% which is down from last year. so you still want to blame Republicans? Let's see if I have this right, Democrats made things better last year and ended the recession but a year later things are worse and yet it reverts back to the Republican problem? LOL, you people should go on tour as a comedy team.

Show us how the repubs created the recession.

another that has acted slowly in bringing about new growth to the economy since it has ended.

What new growth? Are you talking about the loss of 293,000 jobs during Wreckovery Summer and the murder of jobs brought about with the drilling moratorium?

How do you know what I was doing during the Bush years since I didn't join this forum until December last year? Stop speculating and stick to the issue, "your" President has put Bush spending on steroids. Bush didn't have trillion dollar deficits so if you are concerned about deficits start complaining about the Obama spending.

Of course not! Everyone was too busy working and making money and feeding the economy...:rofl

No, alot of Americans got fooled by a punk, with the gift for gab. Most of them now see that that's really his only talent.

Of course they don't. They think we're all too stupid to understand how great Obama really is.

Closing Argument = they've had 2 years to fix what we did in 8. Isn't it time we go back to doing things our way?

Four months before it's two years, for that matter.

I guess I am pretty stupid because I reviewed the Obama resume when he first announced he was running and I saw an empty suit. He has done nothing in the past two years to change that belief. He lacks leadership and executive skills based upon that resume. He does well with a teleprompter but his message hypnotizes those that want to believe the rhetoric while ignoring the lack of substance.

Four months before it's two years, for that matter.

What exactly did they do the two previous years while in control of the legislative process? Have you ever taken a civics class and learn about the three equal branches of govt?

I would love to have an Obama supporter explain to me what Obama did with the TARP repayment and is doing with the unused stimulus money? A fiscally responsible leader would use it to pay down the debt. Then please tell me why there is no fiscal year 2011 budget for a year that begins on October 1?

While your at it explain to me how things are better today when the recession ended in June 2009 and we have every month of 2011 with higher unemployment? Economic growth of 1.6% is hardly stellar and 3 trillion added to the debt in two years is a record.

I anxiously await any Obama supporter to answer those questions.
