Why do I say that? Because 1) There are many's a treehugger that support the moratorium and 2) There was no ban on deepwater drilling. You did well, skirting around the issue, but I knew the big enchilada was coming, sooner, or later.
Perhaps I should have been clearer. I meant that the oil drilling ban hasnt become a huge rallying cry for enviromental groups around Obama, specifically because its not entirely what they want because offically its temporary. What I'm trying to say is that if Obama was doing this for political reasons, I haven't seen what I consider to be a large enough response from the green community. Normally when a politican does something to win votes it becomes something he campaigns on and trumps as a success, Obama hasn't done either of these and is not using the moratorium.

Regarding the other point. I admitally made a mistake in my post, I used the word "drill" when I meant "production." Whats been halted is new wells, or expansion of existing wells, which operate at a depth of over 500 Ft, which is how the moratorium defines "Deepwater." However existing wells which are producing will continue to operate, and any expansion or existing wells in waters less than 500 ft are unaffected.

So yes there is a ban on drilling in some areas, but there is no ban on production.

Now that you've caught my mistake, which is perfectly fair I said it after all, are we going to continue a discussion or would you rather indulge in self-righteous snobbery?

Which do you think it is?
I dispute the idea that Obama's actions are "ruining the economy." For starters, it was already pretty ruined. Also, the decline shifted from "OH GOD FREEFALL" to "wobbly flat maybe gonna dip we're not sure yet." We're better off now than we were when he took office, although we're rating "better off" in terms of "not falling apart as quickly," so it's not like this is optimism speaking.

But nice, if blatantly obvious, attempt at framing the debate. Let me try!

Wiseone, it sounds like you're being making an honest attempt at fairness, but I think you are being naive. Since he doesn't know anything about offshore drilling, why would he ignore an expert panel whose advice he asked for and then attach their names to a set of recommendations that they didn't review?

Does this sound like political gamesmanship to you?

That aside, is it a big secret that his agenda includes deconstructing the carbon economy? He's on record saying his plans will cause electricity prices to necessarily skyrocket. How much of a stretch is it for someone to say he is shutting down drilling jobs in order to further his agenda?

It seems clear enough that Obama is intent on ruining America's energy independence just as he is destroying the economy.

This has been a boon for Canadian exporters but his Greens are also putting pressure to question Canada's oil production.

    Pelosi is getting involved also.

Canada is quite able to look after its environment without the American green party or Nancy Pelosi. Conspiracy theories aren't usually my thing but it seems they want an energy crisis in the USA in order to pass some very restrictive legislation. I can see no other reason for this craziness, but am prepared to listen to other possibilities.
