The White House has tapped a former leader of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Wildlife Federation as the Asian carp czar to oversee the federal response to keeping the invasive species out of the Great Lakes.

On a conference call today with Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and other congressional leaders, President Obama's Council on Environmental Quality announced the selection of John Goss to lead the near $80 million, multi-pronged federal attack against Asian carp.
"This is a serious challenge, a serious threat," Durbin said. "When it comes to the Asian carp threat, we are not in denial. We are not in a go-slow mode. We are in a full attack, full-speed ahead mode. We want to stop this carp from advancing."

Carp. Czar? Really?

Carp.. Czar?? Really??

Carp... Czar??? Really???

I understand the threat the fish poses but... a Czar, really? For a fish? Isn't this getting just a LITTLE silly now?

So you don't think the program should have some one in charge of it? Or you don't think the program is worthwhile? I am totally not following your problem.

Carp really isn't that good of a fish. I say let the drown.

It's a problem, and it's a perfectly legitimate federal response.

State and local issue first off. Secondly aren't there all ready agencies to deal with this problem? Why the need for another layer of "management"? Why not fire the head of the Fish and Wildlife service for failing to deal with the problem and install a new one?

Why do we need a Presidential Appointment to deal with a Fish?

At an average salary of $172,000.00 plus staff for the 'czars'...is it any wonder we are 14 trillion in debt???

State and local issue first off.

The problem effects a number of states, as your article mentions.

Yes, and he is going to be working with them.

Why the need for another layer of "management"?

Every large project has some one who in charge of them. You did not know this?

Why not fire the head of the Fish and Wildlife service for failing to deal with the problem and install a new one?

Because he has only had the job for 6 months? It's kinda not his fault.

Why do we need a Presidential Appointment to deal with a Fish?

Probably simply because it's the easiest way to get some one in the job.

Actually, if it deals with a navigable waterway it is under the US Army Corps of Engineers' jurisdiction. Also, since it affects several states it is a Federal issue by default.

I UNDERSTAND that, however...

How did the Gov't work before all these Czars?

I think in the olden days they were called "department heads."

The problem now is that government is so bloated it takes what amounts to a dictator to cut through all the bull**** so that maybe, just maybe, something productive will be done.

Naturally, the first inclination government has is to make more government to oversee it.

The only person calling him a "czar" is the guy who wrote the article. He is a project manager.

Probably they could have called Dave, the GS-13 in Minnesota and said...this is you, baby...priority one...handle it...and not have had to hire yet another overpaid person with a staff to handle this very terrible 'problem'.

I'd be calling myself "czar." Helluva lot cooler than "project manager."

C'mon, use your head -- that's one more person Obama can say he put to work.

Id say at least 14...that should bring us down .00002615 % if my math is at all close

More than likely the new "czar" will have to have executive secretaries, secretaries and will have to have 8 to 10 staff under him, and each of the staff will have to executive secretaries, secretaries and staff. That staff will have to have executive secretaries, secretaries, and junior staff who will have to have secretaries and assistants .......... I can see where this might balloon up to 100 new jobs or more.

Obama refuses to seal our borders or let the states do the job. We are labled ant-immigration and racist if we want the invasion to stop.
Why not open borders for Asian fish? Fire the bigoted carp czar and save the 80,000,000 bucks.
In all seriousness, what makes any think the government is equipped to solve this problem. It's just more government spending gone amok.

****. There goes that $50,000,000,000.00.

And a real bargain at only $500,000,000 per job!

Nah...the workers will only get paid around 80k to 172k...the rest will go to administrative costs and overhead...

Get rid of the czar. Take the money and pay a bounty for every Asian carp caught. Put money into the pockets of fisherman while we're figuring out how to stop the invasion.
Sometimes I think Obama hires all these worthless Czars just so he can look like he's on top of things.

All different staff, dates, publications...

And amusingly, none of the stories actually have some one calling him a czar, they simply use the title themselves. It kinda makes sense seeing as the term czar is a media invention.

NONE of the "Czars" are called "Czars". Their title is "Assistant to the President and..."

The use of the term Czar is consistently applied and has been since Bush has been using them. I think you are splitting Obamas hairs for him...
