The true cost of the Iraq war: $3 trillion and beyond

Kinda look like the bush administrations estimates of bringing democracy to the middle-east missed the mark a bit. Bush administration's 2003 projections of a $50 billion to $60 billion war. The real cost being according to this article is north of $3 trillion.

I wonder what happened to these famous words?

"We're dealing with a country that could really finance its own reconstruction."

< But today, as the United States ends combat in Iraq, it appears that our $3 trillion estimate (which accounted for both government expenses and the war's broader impact on the U.S. economy) was, if anything, too low. For example, the cost of diagnosing, treating and compensating disabled veterans has proved higher than we expected. >

< For instance, many have wondered aloud whether, absent the Iraq invasion, we would still be stuck in Afghanistan. And this is not the only "what if" worth contemplating. We might also ask: If not for the war in Iraq, would oil prices have risen so rapidly? Would the federal debt be so high? Would the economic crisis have been so severe?>

<The answer to all four of these questions is probably no. >

The haggardness of poverty is everywhere seen contrasted with the sleekness of wealth, the exhorted labor of some compensating for the idleness of others, wretched hovels by the side of stately colonnades, the rags of indigence blended with the ensigns of opulence; in a word, the most useless profusion in the midst of the most urgent wants.Jean-Baptiste Say

Sure... once you inpute any and everything you can think of that might relate to the war, directly or indirectly, regqardless of who paid for it and why, as well as projected spending on same.

So was it much closer to the $50 billion estimate of Bush and company?

For some it was. The oil companies that are back in Iraq, Halliburton, Blackwater and all of the hundreds of contractors that made a bundle.

Check with the Veterans Administration, ask them how much Vietnam is still costing the govt.....we need to learn to fight smarter, with less impact on humans, theirs and ours....

    Hah.
The idiotic countries who supported this war deserve the debt.
Hopefully that'll teach US and UK to not start wars for no reason but I doubt it'll work

Hard to say. We will be paying all the costs for the next 40 years.
Projected total cost of veterans’ health care and disability from the Iraq war: $422 billion to $717 billion.
