I think we should just go ahead and throw the entire DOE (federally) out. It's just a pass-through for federal dollars being redistributed to the states. Let the state DOEs handle the function of monitoring educational success.

Exactly right....The Feds have no business meddling in it to begin with. All they have done is **** things up.

Im betting Hazlnut tried to take me up on my offer, tried to post something that could be construed as positive in support of Beck, and his computer went kabloouiy. And j-mac just got caught in the schrapnel!

Nail what? With every word you reveal you know very little about me.

I have been here long enough to know that there certain folks that will go through conniptions to embrace or defend any and everything that is leftist and condemn any and everything that is right leaning. Oh...sure...theres LOTS on the other side as well. but...regarding the former? yeah...you...
"Leftists" ... you fringe righties crack me up. You all sound like a character from Dr. Strangelove.

BTW -- the Libertarian party called to apologize, it seems the mass exodus from the right after 2008 by the fringe element has swelled their numbers with a lot of uninvited strangers with strange, non-libertarian ideas.

So...try it out...you TRY and pretend for a half a second you could type "I wouldnt have objected if a DIRECTOR of a government department sent a mass emailing to every member of the department inviting them to attend the Beck rally-I think that would be absolutely appropriate"...and if you can do that without your screen going blank and your keyboard catching fire I will post a retraction.
I already did, earlier in the thread.

Screen seems to be working fine.

    Please post the retraction.

Oh...thats right...you are a 'moderate'. And Pete doesnt care about Glenn Beck.

Let the Libertarian party know for me that if they are expecting blind partisanship they are no better than the assclowns from the democrat or republican parties and thinking people actually have independent thoughts that sometimes contradict theirs. Of course...being a 'moderate' you would know that.

Oh...and I checked back...I will gladly post the retraction when you say that you think it is absolutely appropriate for a government official...the head of an entire department...to send an official invitation for the entire staff to join him at a Glenn beck rally. Cut and paste it. You dont even have to type it.

Re: Education secretary urged his employees to attend Sharpton's rally

I'm gonna go with Hazlnut on this one.

The article clearly states that the e-mail was solicited as an "invitation". There's nothing wrong with basically informing your employees of an event where you as their boss will be a guest speaker. In this regard, the e-mail invitation is no different than the President's PR folks sending out a press release detailing his next speaking engagement. Furthermore, even if the EdSec sent the email himself (which there's no indication that he did), doing such still wouldn't violate the Hatch Act which brings me to my next point.

The EdSec position is a Presidential appointee position, not a voter electorate position. Therefore, since the EdSec wasn't campaigning for his office nor is his hiring determined by a vote by the populas, there is no violation here.

Now, I do see the other side of the matter. It does appear that the EdDept was "advertising" the EdSec's speaking engagement just to drum-up attendance numbers for one side of the political spectrum just to counter the other side, but hey...that's politics for ya'. Still, there's nothing illegal or immoral about informing your people of a public event for which you will be a guest speaker at and inviting them to attend. Happens all the time in state government and even in Corporate America.
