You can't 'selectively interpret' the Koran. Its the uncreated (always existent), directly revealed words of Allah spoken in Allah's own language (Arabic) and its pretty damn clear as to what Allah wants. Which is why when a good, tolerant Muslim gets religion and reads the Koran he drives a rented SUV into a crowd in Chapel Hill for 'jihad'.
I can interpret the Qu'ran however I please. There is no one true and final interpretation of the text.
Knowledge is what makes each interpretation in every generation different. Prophet Mohammed encouraged his followers to acquire and expand on it and I'm going to do just that
