Want to be class president? Not if you're black, in one Miss. school

What a stupid policy. I would have run and if I was elected President resigned making the Vice-President the new President.

HAHA! Now that would be classic!

That doesn't make a lick of sense to me. It's racist, b/c they are rotating the positions on an annual basis? So in other words, they are including everybody, so that makes it racist every other year???

Wouldn't racism be, never allowing 1 group or the other to be in a position ever through school policy? I see affirmative action being implimented, but I don't see where its racist. Convaluted yes, but not racist, as every other year the other race gets all the accolades.

Look, I could really care less about this, its stupid to begin with, b/c its school positions, that really don't mean squat or have any real significant importance in life to begin with. It is dumb to me, that this policy has been around for 30 years, just as its dumb to me, that people are calling it racist in nature.

Welcome to the public school system.

Just another reason why I homeschool my kids.

It's racist because your denying a race something one year, while allowing it the next. There taking race into consideration, which is the definition of racism.

People should be hired based on their skills. The best should get chosen for the position they are hoping to get. Though I do think that minorities should be protected from discrimination. If Affirmative action an affective program to do that, I don't know. To be honest I haven't really looked into the situation.

By giving the minorities protection, isn't that basically discriminating against the majorities? Why should minorities get special protection, while the others don't?

Because throughout history the majority has overwhelmingly discriminated against the minority.

I understand where your coming from, but it's based on a 2 year cycle. If you look at it from an annual perspective, it may look racist, but when you take the 2 year cycle into account, it includes everybody.

Again, I say it, its stupid. But what in public school isn't?

You got to have a "B" average to even apply, so that probably rules out 90% of the school....haha.

So history dictates that we give minorities special rights, b/c of people who did bad things to them in a previous century/generation? Why do the majorities of today, have to pay for wrongs, of an entirely deceased generation(s)?

Ok, I read the article, and it looks to me like the school board reversed a policy that said only whites could run one year, and only blacks could run the next year, thus alternating which race would be eligible. The old policy is, IMHO, complete BS. Here is the pertinent part of the article:

According to a memo sent home with students last week, African-American students could not run for class president in Nettleton Middle School this school year. However, the board voted at an emergency session Friday to drop that policy, according to Craig Ford, a reporter with the NBC News affiliate WTVA, who attended the meeting.

They dropped the policy, which had more to do with political correctness than racism, and dropping the dumb policy is certainly not racist. Anybody who wants to run can run now, with no obstacles, and no matter if you are black, white, yellow, or even purple with orange polka dots, may the best person win.

I wish people would read the articles before making comments in threads.

I see it like you do.

Who said I advocated for special rights? I said protect them from being discriminated against.

I still don't get this. How is basically separating the races politically correct? Seriously, I just don't get it.

I can agree with that. If they are not allowed to attend class, then by all means, protect their right to an education. Otherwise, stop excluding others from school activities because of the color of their skin. The quota system was a dumb decision that hurt all students. Now it has been corrected, and everyone is indeed equal now.

It was politically correct in that, since some people believed that blacks were unequal, they had to be given special treatment. THAT is racist, and actually hurts black students.

So their explanation was that black kids couldn't possibly win when running against whites so they separated the elections. Oh okay, I understand it better now. I agree that it is racist, and not only hurts black kids, but all students because it just reinforces a division between the races that they might be learning elsewhere.

Want to show us who said it was?

This OP was started with the idea that this country is full of racists and that is why no one likes the president, congress, health care, bailouts, job bills, stimulas, etc..... pick your favorite liberal agenda item........................ so, YOU'RE ALL RACISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a stretch.

To be honest, the title of the article is extremely misrepresenting. The article itself said that the school would only allow candidates of certain races to run for student elections in order to force minority representation. This policy is racist against everyone, not just black kids. The kids in this story were also mixed, and for all we know they might not have been able to run because this year it was the black kids' turn to be elected. It seems as if the author wants to dishonestly shape our opinions through a misleading title and an emphasis on black children.

Dammit! You mean I have to get new bumper stickers?

It seems that the policy, which dates back decades, is being overturned...

From the first paragraph of the article linked in the OP

a school district board in a Mississippi town on Friday scrapped a system of student elections where race determined whether a candidate could run for some class positions, including president.

You and at least one other beat me to this... I read the article and the OP and made my comment on this (in the same line as yours) before reading the thread...

It's a shame that it took national attention to get this policy ousted. Surprising! But all's right with the world, since it's now been rescinded.

"It is the belief of the current administration that these procedures were implemented to help ensure minority representation and involvement in the student body," the statement said. "It is our hope and desire that these practices and procedures are no longer needed."

The practice was abolished when hit with a bright light, as it should have been. I can see why it was established thirty years ago. And, actually? I think it speaks to whites' tolerance that it lasted this long.

This article doesnt appear to have anything to do with racism. It has everything to do with what happens in a school when administrators begin social engineering and experimentation. School administrators and community leaders have been doing this kind of crap since the 70s and the bussing programs. It appears they are mandating skin color as a criteria (and of course they posted the election criteria for the 'white' years, even though the article states there are 'black' years). This kind of nonsense has to stop.

Not really. But it was cited as "proof" of a type of racism which simply isn't present in what the story was about.

This policy isn't "racist" against anyone; it is a well-intentioned policy that was probably almost unthinkably progressive thirty years ago when it was conceived: basically, in order to effect racial equality in student government, blacks and whites were forced to take turns filling different student government positions.
The community has now moved beyond the need for such a policy, apparently, and it's right that it be done away with at this time.
But it's stupid to claim it wasn't needed or useful thirty years ago, in the recently-segregated South, or that it's "racist".
