The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

This just is NOT America anymore!!!!

Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway — and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.
That is the bizarre — and scary — rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants — with no need for a search warrant. (See a TIME photoessay on Cannabis Culture.)
It is a dangerous decision — one that, as the dissenting judges warned, could turn America into the sort of totalitarian state imagined by George Orwell. It is particularly offensive because the judges added insult to injury with some shocking class bias: the little personal privacy that still exists, the court suggested, should belong mainly to the rich.

:rofl

No one 'sneaks' around my hood - not even Gollum

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

ALL my moves? Even my fancy, crowd pleasing moves?

I'm going to have to come up with some new ones.

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

I believe if carry a cell phone on your person, you can be tracked as well.

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

I read somewhere that the black boxes on vehicles will have the ability to broadcast GPS data at some point. I can't wait for the government to get their hands on that information. Imagine being taxed per mile driven, or being mailed a speeding ticket because your GPS unit registered a higher-than-legal speed limit and broadcasted it to the police.

That's an easy one to fix. Disconnect battery, find black box, open with screwdriver, remove circuitry, reconnect battery, start car, flip off government officials.

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

What would be the point of following someone around like that?

Bait Car? Parole violation?
I don't see how it would matter to me.

*ooooh noooo! She's going to . . . . class . . . . the grocery store . . . . *gaaaaasp* the gas station!*

:rofl
I'd feel sorry for the person who has to track me.

Government isnt that dumb, they'll make maufactures put the said GPS into vehicles in away you'll have to remove other pieces in order to get to it and then the housing that contains the GPS will have special screws which then you have to go on the net to find the tool (which will be a bitch to find) in order to unscrew the said screws.

Or you can just craft your own tool and be done with it :)

Yeah for smarts.

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

It occurs to me that our government is assaulting us from alllll directions:

Invasions of privacy
Wasteful spending
Pandering to special interests
Bigger government
Higher taxation
Failure to rein in spending
Corruption
Ignoring constituency

We should be delighted the self-serving bastards are in recess.

The government agent who sneaks on my property will have Rottweiler hanging on his ass. Now, if they were to put one on my car while I was at work, they would lead a boring life. I go to work and come home, go to work and come home. Every once in awhile, I will go somewhere on business but nothing exciting.

Switch it to only track 911 calls. Then again, turn it off when you don't need it.

It's still pretty easy, find the "kill switches" in the circuit and bypass. The same thing was said about pollution controls in vehicles and your average "redneck" can "open up" an exhast/fuel system in no time.

I HATE the enivornment controlls that are in my truck. My engine light has been on for three months because of those things malfunctioning, luckly my mechanic says its no big deal.

I think you missed this part here, so most likely the left circuit court of appeals will be overturned by the SC.

True, I suspect a workaround will soon emerge in the barrio. I have a couple of amigos here who will help my vehicle "pass" an emissions test in the event that I should happen to fail one elsewhere.

Still, I'm not terribly thrilled at the idea of having to jury rig my car.

I know it, just about every time my vehicle acts up it's some pollution control device.

Yep. And agree on the jerry rigging part. In a free society that should never be a necessity.

I used to have a buddy that ran an emissions inspection place.
He told me to run a bottle of rubbing alcohol through the tank, that should get you to pass the inspection.
(disclaimer: I've never done it, so I don't know what will actually happen.)

Thank goodness the place I live doesn't require that stupid crap.

If that does happen, there will be a software hack that will disable it.
You can guarantee that.

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

This continuing trend of deciding that warrants are not needed is unacceptable. For actions that seriously invade a persons's privacy, a check on abuse is a requirement. There is absolutely no good reason why the police cannot simply go to a judge a get a warrant if they actually need to track someone. GPS tracking is not a common activity, nor it is time sensitive enough to require immediate action.

Does it take a court order?

It can lead to over exaggeration of threats, especially when agents have to show results.

Can anyone with the right kind of equipment track you too, if so, it would be a boon to private detectives and repos.

ricksfolly

Re: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves

How do you stop the government from doing this when both parties are in support of it? If your vote can't change it then what does the average person do?

I feel the same way and as someone mentioned, if you have a cell phone on your person they can track you that way..... they can also listen in on any phone anywhere whether it's in your pocket or in your home.

My wife and I would bore them to death.

A bigger concern to all of you paranoids should be all of the surveillance cameras and “face recognition software”.
