Re: Protesters rally against, for planned Islamic center in New York

From what I understand there have been over 700 new mosques built [or opened for worship] in the US since 9/11. So I doubt this is primarily an issue of religious freedom

More about assimilation than religion. I see in the news and here at DP people talking about HATE being the cause of intolerance and the reason behind opposition to this mosque... which is untrue for 99.911% of us. America has taken an enormous hit from people who claim their primary motivation for killing us is justified by their muslim faith. Now we have have people of the same faith who want to build a place of worship near where their fellow muslims attacked us.

Yes they can build and [at this point] looks like they will do just that. However, there are radical christians just as violent as terrorist muslims... and I'm afraid this will bring them out of their camps and into NYC.

All it takes is one idiot like Tim Mcvey to bring the war back to our soil... and we have at least tens of thousands of them. The emotions against this location are too strong to expect inaction. Violent people don't need much arousal or provocation to take action. Unfortunately thats the reality we live in today.

Another thing to consider is a growing number of New York construction workers are vowing not to work on the mosque and if their unions support their position no telling what could happen. NYC construction unions will not allow scabs to build on their turf.... and they have a lot of muscle behind them. Another source of potential violence.

Louis Coletti, president of the Building Trades Employers' Association, said unions have not yet taken a "formal position" on Park51, but he understands why members would be hesitant to work there. "It's a very difficult dilemma for the contractors and the organized labor force because we are experiencing such high levels of unemployment," he said. "Yet at the same time, this is a very sacred sight to the union guys."

If the promoters of this project have any sensitivity at all... they will make a concerted effort to gain the trust of all who are against this... especially the families directly hurt from this tragedy. I'd personally like to see this Iman Rauf have some type of "townhall meeting" with family survivors of those killed and release a statement outlining specific reasons why they want to build at this location and provide full disclosure of funding.

while highly unconstitutional it points out that this mosque does more to damage relations than "build bridges"
I'm not sure the goal is to build bridges. It may be just to be jerks. But there ain't no law against that either; so I see no point in endlessly bitchin' about it.

How does building a Community Center over a Burlington Coat Factory effect the dignity of 9/11 victims?

Does Bruce Springstein know that these wing-nuts have hijacked his song "Born in the USA"?

I guess the Constitution is an inconvenient document...

Pretty pathetic, if you ask me, that a multi-cultured country can be so racist and xenophobic.

    Check out this genius:

Where, on the basketball court or the Child Care room?? What an idiot. Thanks Glenn and Sean for dumbing down our country and wiping your ass with the Bill of Rights. 'Freedom of Religion (except Islam)'. Idiots!
Opposition to a brutal legal system that regards women as property is now "racist"?

    Speaking of idiocy.......

Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

If I'm trying to plug a hole in a boat and what I am doing is making the hole bigger, I'm going to stop what I'm doing.

I would disagree. Before you can build a bridge, you have to make a distinction. if Muslims are not them, they should not be treated like them. hence, it has to be understod there is no reason, logical reason for anyone to be offended. Therefore, making a stand can be argued as important.

In fact, conceding is what you are doing.

I know what they claimed it's for. I was saying I don't know if that's really the goal. It could be that they're just trying to be jerks.

Nor did I say you have. But we've multiple threads now that are some horrible amounts of pages because people do continue to endlessly bitch about the mosque. My statement remains valid, I do not see the point in endlessly bitching about the problem because there's no legitimate road we have and bitching just plays right into their hands by making it a huge deal when it's best ignored.
