High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they face

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Because this is what you get when the government does something for you -- it wants a say in how you benefit from the product or service.

Next silly question?

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Well, then, I guess you shouldn't pay the city to take your garbage.

You lose any and all legitimate claims to privacy with respect to your garbage the minute you hand that garbage to a government worker.

I believe most places already require you to have trash pickup except in rural areas. I used to live in a place where trash was combined with my water bill.
I'm about ready to stop saying we're on our way to becoming a nanny state. I think we have arrived.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Government intrusion and mandated eco-religious nut nonsense.

Its not a matter of laziness its a matter of the government forcing you to do something and then spying on you to make sure you do what they want you do.

That's what everyone said about seatbelt laws, too. And now no one really bitches about it. Because the burden isn't that great.

If they required you to take your stuff to the recycling center, I'd say it was burdensome. This isn't burdensome.

If you lived in Cleveland, then I'd say fight the law. Since said law would have no impact on me whatsoever, it doesn't bother me. It's not in my house and technically, the garbage cans belong to the city, not me. They can do with them whatever they'd like to do.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

That's like making people drink 8 glasses of water. Is it good for you/society, sure.... Is it the government's job? No. I will see this in the future. We will have these water bottles that are linked to a gps transmitter and a wifi hookup that will tell the g-man that we aren't drinking all 8 glasses of water and get fined for not doing so.

Remember Kagan refusing to say it would be unconstitution to make people eat so many vegetables a day? She said it would be a stupid law but not unconstitutional.
Well, she's now sitting on the Supreme Court.

Does the government require a chip in your car to notify the authorities if you are not wearing a seat belt, speeding, not using proper signaling or parking wrong? So you can not compare seat belt laws with eco-religious nut nonsense laws.

It bothers me because if it can happen there it can happen here.

It's not in my house and technically, the garbage cans belong to the city, not me. They can do with them whatever they'd like to do.

Government officials are merely servants of the people and the city is property of the tax payers,so it does not belong to the city. So they can not do what ever they like.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

If you disable the chip, you're not letting them do anything.

The proper response is to elect a new batch of city councilmen that will have the chips removed.

Not to mention the lawsuits the residents should be filing for invasions of privacy. I'm sure enterprising lawyers can find some case law supporting that one.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

What's the issue here?

Big Brother.

Are there actually lazy pigs out there who actually can't be bothered to recycle their junk??

No, I can't be bothered. That's why it's called junk. I'm perfectly willing to let some wino crawl the curb side picking the valuables out of my trash and getting the price of a bottle of ripple from the recyclying center thereby. But most munipalities make it a crime for that to happen, the whole issue is that the city isn't getting it's full cut of the recycling pie.

It's 100% about control, money, power, intervention, snooping, privacy, and the introduction of the telescreen into your living room.

It's 0% about the environment.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

This is just anal. I don't understand why the government is so hard on the individual about recycling when it's not really that efficient. If you want materials to be used wisely then you have to target the consumer system from the production side in order to control what materials are used to make the products, ship them, store them, etc. If we used that method then we would reduce a lot of waste by conservation alone.

But no, as usual, the individual is targeted. In my opinion having a chip on your property that monitors your activities in any way is unconstitutional as it is an invasion of privacy. If this program is voluntary then fine, but if it's being forced then I hope the courts toss it out. Yeah, it's just recycling, no big deal right? In principle however it's just further intrusion into people's lives.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Though I'm not sure this chip idea is the right way to go, I feel it is unacceptable to throw away recyclables. Talk about a waste of resources.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

is the chip made out of recycled materials, 'cause if it's not, that's hypocritical.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

How come posters are trying to disable the chips? I think they're great. It should be compulsory to recycle and those who don't do it should be fined.

That is the law here, and one that is increasingly enforced... with fines...

I don't have a problem with it... what do you have against putting some of your garbage in the recycle bin and trash in the trash bin?

You mean you can't be bothered to have one bin for trash and one bin for recyclables? Are you THAT lazy?

Some places use a "bag and tag" scheme where you have to pay for specially marked bags. Personally, I think that is a better way to encourage compliance rather than having an expensive and invasive computer chip.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Lmao, I would just clone the chip/barcode and just pop it on my regular trash bin, I'm sure they only scan and trash and I doubt they keep the codes separate, which might seem fishy that you only recycle but don't have any trash whatsoever.

And should it be the government's job to make you recycle? Heck no! It's their own imperative and if they don't then they don't. If they do, well whoopie Do, who cares really. Saves some resources, but heck, plastic isn't really a recyclable resource because they can only recycle downward before the last recycled plastic is not recyclable.

That's like making people drink 8 glasses of water. Is it good for you/society, sure.... Is it the government's job? No. I will see this in the future. It's all bull****, cities can't even sell all they recycle now. I've heard that our city throws away much of the recycling for this very reason. This is about revenue, pure and simple, not about recycling.

The chip is a bad idea. I think most people are like you and prefer to recycle. I'm the same, but I don't want to be forced to do what is right.
I have to drive my recylables somewhere and sometimes I don't make big deal if some get thrown in the trash. I sure wouldn't want to be fined just because i'm not perfect at it.
Not everyone even has the bins or programs in their area. That's maybe something that should be taken care of to make it easier for people. Big Brother monitoring our trash is what I find unacceptable.

Where I live, we have trash trucks and recyclable trucks that come by our home. We have a bin for trash and one for recyclables and both are taken away daily. It is legally required here. Taipei has a bag and tag style system where you have to purchase special bags and garbage will only be taken in those bags... everything else goes in the recycling truck. We don't have that where I live, but we have the separate bins and trucks and both come by daily.

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

Again, I'm still wondering who are these assholes in Cleveland who need a fine to remind them to recycle.

Are they the fat slobs getting diabetes from drinking 2-liter-big-gulp sodas and making us pay their medical bills? Are they so fat from consumption that they can't bend over to break down a cardboard box? Are they so freaking lazy that they can't be bothered to spend a few extra minutes stacking pizza boxes and tossing them in the right bin.

Are they the ones who have kids that look like a willy wonka character, plump as can be??

No sympathy. Break your **** down or pay the fine, fat pig.

Daily trash pick up WOW. Here in Dallas they have cut back to once a week due to budget constraints.

When you live in the second-most crowded country (of those with more than 10 million people) in the world, you need to make sure you get rid of the garbage for sanitary reasons...

Glad I live in a country with daily (sometimes twice daily) garbage pickup...

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

It wouldn't smell if the food waste went on your compost heap. :2razz:
One local council has a two bin system with clear guidelines, and an obvious hint in the different bin sizes.

Big Bin Little Bin

Re: High-tech carts will tell on Cleveland residents who don't recycle ... and they f

I would love it if the area I lived in actually picked up recyclables. I surely wouldn't complain about some chip

We have government issued blue barrels that food waste goes into. It is fed to the pigs...

If government wants compliance, they should make compliance as easy as is practical. I know my hometown in NH has weekly recyclable pickup
