EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Britain's government says it has warned Libya that any celebration of Friday's anniversary of the release from jail of the Lockerbie bomber would be deeply offensive to the families of the mainly U.S. victims of the attack.

Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi, the only person convicted in connection with the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 above Lockerbie, Scotland, was ordered in 2001 to serve 27 years in jail, but freed on Aug. 20 of last year on compassionate grounds, as he is suffering from prostate cancer.

In a statement urging Libya to show restraint, Britain's Foreign Office in Friday described the bombing, which killed 259 people onboard — mostly Americans — and 11 on the ground, as the "worst act of terrorism in British history."

You can't make this **** up folks, you can't. I hope Libya has a tickertape parade and a night of "Celebration" in this guys honor. Just to MOCK the Brits for this... PATHETIC "warning". I'm laughing my ass of at the UK, and praying for them.

It's funny till you realize just how far the Brits have fallen.

So what exactly were we suppose to do?

Threaten to bomb them?

Try ignoring them? Telling them it will hurt your feelings if they celebrate...

What I' most amazed by is how someone can only get 27 years for killing 259 people and WHY would they ever be released on compassionate grounds?

Seriously. That makes no sense to me.

It does if the conspiracy theoriests are right and it was part of a deal with BP to solidify a contact for the oil waters around Lybia.

They let him go because he got cancer and the doctor told him he had six months to live after refusing chemo. So they felt sowwy for him. After release and a good laugh, he went in for chemo and has lived every since. The Brits were duped. :lamo

For the record, the Scots were dupped. The British government was against this...

He is most likely innocent any ways. The Brits, Scots and American's did not want the case appealed because it would expose how weak a case it in reality was. And lets not forget that this is only newsworthy because a few US congressmen has it in for BP.

The fact that this asshole is free is just....its beyond me. Truly, i am speechless.

Wait, are you vouching for the innocents of a murderer who killed over 200 people?

The answer to your question Tucker is that he was convicted on very flimsy evidence, by a panel of judges (not by a jury) and he was most probably innocent. His case was going to go through an appeal before he was released. Personally I think the government was trying to save face - many of the victims' families over here believe he is innocent and an appeal would have brought up a lot of unanswered questions. They didn't even require him to drop his appeal before releasing him - what does that tell you? It tells me that he is innocent and the people who put him behind bars know it.

Everybody knows that the CIA blew up that plane, not Muslim terrorists.

It looked like a fix at the time and to many who followed his appeal process, which was looking more likely to be successful as time passed. A compassionate release did not include a requirement to withdraw his appeal, yet conveniently for the various governments, he did so. If his appeal had continued, then his win would have left nobody guilty of the crime.

I would think allowing Scotland to free a terrorist due to some retarded compassionate grounds clause and possibly working a oil a deal with the Libyans in exchange for the terrorist release would be offensive to the victims families.

Yeah, only he isn't a terrorist.

Pete, to hear you tell things, there are no actual terrorists anywhere in the world.

Well -- and this is off the top of my head -- he could have stayed in the klink up there in ol' Alba.

Wow... very specific course of action.

Well -- and this is off the top of my head -- he could have stayed in the klink up there in ol' Alba.

I'm not too educated on this whole Lockerbie Bombing thing. However having heard both sides here, what if he really was innocent, and if he isn't. I don't understand why the **** he was released.

He wasn't released because anyone thought he was innocent. He was released because he supposedly had terminal cancer, had only a few months to live, and they thought it would be nice if he were able to die at home.

Re: UK warns Libya any celebration of Lockerbie bomber's freedom would be offensive a

He should die at home.. Slowly, like medievil and all.. :)

Scumbag, and the Scotts are equally culpable!

I knew that much, still bogus since he's still alive.

and they thought it would be nice if he were able to die at home.

I bet the victims families wish their loves ones could have died at home on their death beds at least. I have no sympathy for this bastard if he did it. But if there is evidence to the contrary we must not be so quick to wish such terrible things upon him.

Otherwise **** the mother****er :)

Re: UK warns Libya any celebration of Lockerbie bomber's freedom would be offensive a

He was duly convicted and no one thinks he's innocent. Except, apparently, PeteEU, but then he also thinks the only reason anyone's interested is because of BP. :)confused:)
