Or bio-fuels. Or gas from land fills.

    It can also use solar.

DIY solar kits are hitting the market. My son's science teacher has one of those homes where the meter runs backwards and they get a refund from the state.

Fossile fuels (as we know them) will be history in 10 years.

Gonna take longer than that. Until another power source becomes more cost-effective than fossil fuels, people will be resistant to switching over.

I agree, they are too expensive for now...plus, there are some rare earth minerals involved.
Electric Utilities are building more coal plants for now. They don't seem to have any faith in the bloom box yet...

Refund would be from the utility, not the state, that is how it worked when I worked for one. And I would like to know how solar would run a fuel cell, or even why. Wouldn't it be better to use the solar to generate the electricity directly?

It's not about finding one new power source--a magic bullet.

A combination of green technologies will eliminate the need for coal plants.

Hybrids and electric cars are like the DVDs phasing out the old VHS tapes. As prices come down over time, people will switch over.

The new Ford Focus EV will go 100 miles on a charge. By choosing an existing platform and using technology developed by an auto supplier, Ford saved on R&D, and the sticker price will be well under the $40K Volt. Ironically, Ford's Explorer, though not the first SUV, was the consumer model that moved the auto-industry in that direction.

New technologies are always high-priced at first.

Not until they design one that will go more than a couple hundred miles between charges and is bigger than a bread box.

How do you think your vegetables, furniture, clothing, etc. will get to the store?? By a great big electric truck traveling across the country ???

Correct, the utility issues a direct refund for NEM. The state and fed give the tax credit.

And solar fueling a cell was a statement made during the 60 minutes interview. I have no idea. Corn needs sun?

It is good that we are doing research and coming up with new technology, but for that technology to be viable, it will have to be affordable, and that must include purchase price and maintenance expenses. The changeover will not happen in one decade, more like 3 or 4 decades. I probably only have 2 decades left, so I won't see much of it, but I will always be watching.

Corn ethanol? not likely....we are already using that to boost the octane in gasoline, and that made the cost of corn food products go up. We don't have enough land to grow the amounts of corn needed.

One of these days we are going to hit a wall energy wise, and we won't be where we need to be with energy supplies, so we will have to accept the unthinkable, and that is energy conservation.
A very large percentage of our energy is wasted, consumed for no good reason. And the last politician who mandated conservation was Jimmy Carter.
