Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operate

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

That's the part that makes me want to kick him in the nuts.

It's a little girl, selling freaking lemonade you dip****. Go bother some dirty slop house of a restaurant and QUIT PICKIN ON LITTLE KIDS.

Holy crap, I agree with Vicchio!!

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

Another stupid loophole in a law. This little girl shouldn't have to pay for a temporary license. Like most business licenses there should be a minimum daily income to require the license.

This isn't liberalism or conservatism, it is bureaucracy.

That you are absolutely right about.

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

I dunno man just seems to be a bit much. Down south when you see a stand selling cantelope, boiled peanuts, watermelon, corn, tomatoes etc on the side of the road no one really bothers them, why both a kid? I'm not asking the guy selling me the corn if he used pesticides or what kind of corn it is, or the method, or wanting him to show me a business license for selling some corn, I just want some damn corn.

Maybe. Until you catch salmonella and die. As does your wife. And then your kids. And then all the other people who bought peanuts from that guy. When that happens, the authorities are very much going to want to know who sold those contaminated peanuts, so at the very least they can stop the tainted peanuts from being sold and risking the lives of others.

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

Boiled peanuts are boiled in salt water to make them salty, soft and delicious. Salt kills bacteria. In my 25 years of living, never have I once heard of this happening. Btw, ever watch "Monk"?

Nope. But there was a peanut recall in January of 2009 because of salmonella. And while that may in particular may have been a bad example, I was trying to point out the virtues of having all vendors, whether they be adult or child, be licensed. While it may not prevent the spread of some type of illness, it can aid in the back-tracking of an illness.

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

Oh, take your BS somewhere else, try selling lemonade instead.

This isn't liberalism, this is senseless bureaucracy, a crime which BOTH sides of the isle are guilty of.

Are we playing Survivor on a desert isle now? Actually, that might be fun... let the libs start on one side of the island and the neocons start on the other and let the best side survive...

I see it playing out this way:

Week 1 - Neo-cons eat most of their food supplies.
Week 3 - Hungry for food, Neo-cons device a plan to attack and then feast upon the strongest of Liberals.
Week 4 - They prepare their weapons and anticipate being greeted as liberators by the weakest of the Liberals.
Week 6 - They finally attack and though initially seem to have the upper hand, they soon lose it and find themselves facing an increasingly popular insurgency.
Week 10 - After 4 weeks of constant counter attacks by Liberals the Neo-Cons finally admit they made a horrible mistake and then proceed to leave the island. Thus allowing Conservatives(who for the past 9 weeks seem to have hidden in caves so as to not piss off Neo-Conservatives) to blame the Liberals for eating all the food.

Thanks for the laugh...

The other thing to consider is that this was at a fair/convention. I think that puts it in a different arena than just selling lemonade on your front lawn in the classic way. Conventions have government people walking around all the time and no one gets off easy.
I think the location was what got the whole thing started. Yes I saw where the county officials apologized and stated the intent of the law, but the health officer had to make an on the spot call, not wait on a ruling from the council. What if the health officer let the little girl continue to sell lemonade at the fair and Monday morning the county wanted to fire him for not doing his job of enforcing health code violations?

There was recently a big charity drive and there were lemonade stands all over my little podunk burg. Of course they were all on front lawns (no malls, grocery stores, etc.) and everybody knew what they were about. No problems, some even got their pictures on the front page of the community paper...LOL

One of the best posts ever.

Sheer brilliance.

I think it should be reversed....

Week 1 - Libs pool their resources. "Neo-cons" does the same.
Week 2 - Libs and "Neo-cons" consumed most of their resources. "Neo-cons" start foraging for new supplies. Libs start demanding "Neo-cons" to share their own supplies with the libs in the name of social equality or social justice, whichever is catchier.
Week 3 - There was no week 3 because the Libs sued the "Neo-cons" and the tv show production studios for inhumane practices or whatever they can come up of....

I'm reminded of a world simulation game/study that was done. Players would run simulated nations and have all sorts of control over financial policy, foreign trade, military action, etc. Before the game, players were given a test. People scoring high on the right-wing authoritarian scale in one group, people low on the scale in another. The "liberal" group worked out pretty well. Lots of people died in Africa from starvation, but eventually resources were distributed properly and things were relatively stable.

The high-RWA group obliterated the planet in a global thermonuclear war.

This is what happens when you make law-making a full-time job. They think they need to pass laws to make it look like they are doing something, then they start doing their tweakings and you know how it goes when you continuously try to tweak your car or your computer, something is bound to break... In this case, common sense.....

Common sense? get real, this is Obama's America (you know, the one with 57 States), you expect common sense to be applied.
Ye Gods the naivety of it!

They must have got there orders directly from. The Oval Office, what an evil man Obama is...

I thought FDR was the root of all evil?

Could you imagine if a Republican had won WW2.

We'd never hear the end of it...

Which they forgot about the human factor, computer/formula based systems will only figure out the extent of the world, and yes, social equality is great in a simulation. But in real life, people do get greedy and that is one thing you would have to overcome, which is genuinely impossible.

Re: Portland lemonade stand runs into health inspectors, needs $120 license to operat

I was being serious.

And I'm not against a kid making some money. And no, I don't think kids should get taxed when they go mow lawns. But I do think it would be helpful to require them, if they're under a certain age, to purchase a cheap business license, about $5, in order to operate. Once they pay that license they should then get a pamphlet that lists any responsibilities they may have in performing their business, if any.

I don't see what's wrong with that. What's wrong with having a kid who is trying to make a profit be made aware of and educated of any laws they may be liable for despite being a child?

If a kid is going to have a lemonade stand, what's wrong with giving her a pamphlet on basic health and safety procedures for preparation of foods and drinks? If a kid is going to mow lawns, what's wrong with giving him a pamphlet on good safety measures, such as proper eye-wear?

Accidents don't care if it's a kid doing this stuff. Litigation doesn't care if it's a kid doing this stuff. What's wrong with requiring a $5 child business license that in the purchase of it will provide educational materials for the child on how to operate whatever they're doing in a manner safe to them as well as their customers?

Go for frig sake. It is a lemonade stand and why ruin kids having fun and trying to make money with all this crap? There will be enough of this when they become adults.

I am starting to think the world I live in really sucks. Kids cannot even have a damn lemonade stand without adults stepping in to ruin everything.

The adults in this world should all be on Xanex or something maybe it will chill em the heck out:(

How does going down to City Hall, paying $5, getting a license printed, and getting a pamphlet on safety and health procedures ruin things for kids?
