Obama pleads with Republicans on small business bill

i saw where the republicans refused to support the small business measure because they were limited to three amendments
wondered what three plus amendments that the republicans insisted on which caused them to scuttle the help for small business, America's job generator

It sounds like to me there are numerous admendments that they want to at least introduce for consideration, but that is apparently being flatly rejected.

which is why i expressed interest in the matter of the amendments
were they unacceptable to the demos
did the demos want not to be seen as caving into the repubs by allowing more than three amendments
and were those amendments germane to the bill, itself
once we learn the content of those amendments we might better evaluate which side was most responsible for the failure of a much needed bill

Man...all I can say is they must set the 'bar' way low in California...wow.

LOL....the problem with "Trickle down economics" is that it is based on the belief that if you give big tax breaks to corporations and business, that it will "trickle down" to the consumer. The fact is.....it rarely trickles down very much. It didn't work under Reagan and it didn't work under Bush. Bill Clinton corrected the flawed economic policy and Obama is attempting to do the same. But...as usual, the wealthy and those who benefit the most politically from them are fighting it because they don't want to lose their benefits.

This bill would pass in an instant if the Democrats allowed Republicans to offer more than three amendments to it... That is the only thing holding this bill up.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), an architect of the bill, pressed McConnell on the precise number of amendments his side would be satisfied with.

But McConnell punted. "That is the sort of thing that the majority leader and I work on every day, ... and we ought to do that."

Pressed further, McConnell called for regular order, prompting the cloture vote to begin and effectively cutting off the Louisiana Democrat.

Looks to me like the Republicans just want to keep stalling. When asked for how many amendments they would want, they couldn't give an answer, because in reality it didn't matter.

This is their game plan and it's disgusting.

As a small business owner, how does this bill benefit me?

Be specific please.

it will allow you to accelerate depreciation on new purchases
it will provide access to loan monies to community banks if your firm has been unable to obtain financing from the bailed out major banks
it will infuse money to the community banks so that they can continue to compete against those multi-national lenders

So other than acceleration of depreciation which will be offset by the new taxes I must pay and the healthcare I must provide, this is really a bank bill?

From your link --

"If this bill becomes law, small businesses and start ups will see benefits right away."

Obama's plan would offer small banks capital and incentives to lend to small businesses, to unlock frozen credit for the small firms. I think it's safe to say that the government is going to help banks loan money to small businesses who don't qualify for loans.

It would also create tax incentives for new investments by small businesses which want to expand -- for instance, offering quick tax reductions for outlays on new machinery or equipment. The Bush cuts that he wants to repeal do exactly that.

The plan would also wipe out capital gains taxes on key investments in small businesses, in a bid to encourage the flow of capital to such firms. "Small businesses" will get tax breaks while people who are dead will pick up the slack through gvmt confiscation of $550,000 of their AFTER TAX money on a $2 million estate.

Makes sense to me. 'Course, Hellhound, your business may not be "small enough" to qualify. J/K

Probably not. I do very well. :pimpdaddy:

We don't need loans. but it's nice the government is helping banks lend me my bailout money in order for them to lend me said money, so that I can pay thier increased taxes.

because my sister already provided healthcare to her employees, she now gets a break for doing just that. good deal.

I give my employess a health care addendum to thier checks, where they could get the coverage they wanted. I will no longer be able to do this, and they will all be forced into a crappy plan, that will cost me more money. HOORAY!

Geezus...its like a guy in a 9 foot hole sayin "HEY! I need another shovel down here!!!!"

Like I said...low. Wow.

why will it cost more more, rev? you'll get a break for doing it, right?

LibLady, your sister ALWAYS got a tax break for providing health insurance to her employees. Don't get too excited.

I don't think so. It's a mandate now, where I will have to spend more to give my employees less. Giving me part of that back, my employees still get less while I pay more. Pure statism.

Absolutely we do.....Greed. Trickle down economics never works....it never has and it never will because of one reason.....greed.

If you really believe that nonsense then you are diametrically opposed to how this country works. If you think people who make more are simply greedy and don't deserve it come right out and say you are a socialist and stop pretending for us.

yep, if you are profitting by a quarter million and have no financing needs, other than quicker write downs of acquired assets and a stronger banking system, that bill would not do much for your situation

So it's not really a "small business bill" after all then...

So it's not really a "small business bill" after all then...

sure it is
i have lots of small business loan packages already completed for a variety of clients who are having a difficult time getting financing
the major banks are ignoring small business lending. in many instances refusing to renew annual credit lines of long term, successful and solvent companies
that big bank bailout provided an infusion of capital that those multi-nationals can lend to israelis, south koreans, brazilians and other off shore corporations and realize a better yield than here in the USA
meanwhile, community banks have been subjected to increased reserve requirements, and did not get to belly up to the fed's bar like the big boys. so, until this bill passes, they necessarily have to be very rigid in their lending practices
net result, most small businesses needing funds to weather the storm are without the necessary capital to do so
and since small business is the major generator of jobs in America, they are without the means to generate jobs
there is no wonder why the economy is down and will continue to lag until we infuse the small business sector with loans to the creditworthy

Ok, I can see that. Weren't the bailouts supposed to do this, then the banks ended up holding onto the money anyway?

so, some is worse than nothing? good lord.

Actually, yeah it is when you are talking about meddling with a bad situation. I would prefer not to see another half assed attempt by Obama to fix something he knows nothing about. If I want to know where to find a good latte or make a 3-point shot, I'll ask the amoeba in chief. Otherwise, I'd prefer he just got out of the way for the rest of his term.

Ok, I can see that. Weren't the bailouts supposed to do this, then the banks ended up holding onto the money anyway?

the bailouts didn't go to the community banks
only the too-large-to-fail lenders got the capital infusion
but the more rigid reserve requirements and tightened federal reserve scrutiny are now imposed on all banks, making it more difficult for community lenders to authorize anything other than the most secure loans

Easy rev...dont give away the plot too early-In the name of increasing public exposure and because the banks have held ont their profits, it is necessary for the government to federalize the banking system...

The fact is ... he is correct, HG.

Republicans are nothing more than big business mouthpieces. Republicans have ALWAYS had issues with honesty (so have Democrats) ....

It's time for laws that force big businesses to pay a hefty price for interfearing in politics.

You are aware that laws that affect, "corporations", by law, must be applied to all corporations, equally, regardless of that corporation's size?

Obama is the president of higher business taxes and more regulation. Someone, please, explain to me how he's looking out for small business.

McConnell probably does not have an exact number because he has most likely not gone around to every Senator and said do you have a concrete number of amendments that you want to offer. They don't have to have infinity, but three is bogus.
