USDA Official Saying She Didn't Give 'Full Force' of Help to White Farmer resigns

You're not gonna have a leg to stand on if it turns out the video was unfairly cut Grim.

All Breitbart needs to do is release the video and let her entire speech speak for itself.

But that's yet to be done.

This is just another racist BS story from the Right Wing. Sad.

Breitbart's Sherrod/NAACP story disintegrates

And yet she resigned and the NAACP issued a statement condemning her remarks immediately after the video was released. If it really was "just another racist BS story from the Right Wing", I don't think either of those actions would have taken place.

Once something like that comes out it's very hard to come back, and in this case if she's been misrepresented you've already proven you have no interest in the truth, you've made up your mind and no evidence to the contrary is gonna change that.

She said she discriminated against a farmer based on his race.... End of discussion.

She admits she discriminated yes, but the farm was saved might I remind you. And if it made her realise that after that race shouldn't be an issue. Then no harm no foul.

I often wonder why some white folk are obsessed with trying to find black racists, as if it's like, hey look there's a black racist.... can I be racist again?

And NO I don't mean you two.

Let me help you recognize the point where the discussion ends for those of us who put honesty above politics.

There is no excuse for any government official to discriminate against a person based on their race...

Like I said, this discussion is over!

She wasn't a government official. This happened 24 years ago.

And Byrd only inducted new people into the KKK. . . but because he became an elected official and claimed to let all that go - it's ok!

 I don't tolerate racism at all - I wasn't born into a world where that was tolerable or acceptable - ever.

The truth, as you stated, is that she discriminated. Why are you defending that, and why would we want someone like that working in our government?

If something came out that could possibly explain away her remarks, I'd certainly take a look at it, but as it stand now, she sure sounds like a racist to me.

"

This is all we have - the last 1/2 of the released video.

She states that "it is about black and white . . . but it's not" and then states "it opened my eyes" . . . and obviously continues beyond the video itself but continues onto what?

Does she really continue on to reprieve herself?
I don't know.
We don't know.

Does that mean she feels *racist* now - maybe - we don't know.

Well...I dont know...it sure looks to me that even in the very limited snippet that they bothered to post that she was using herself as an example of learning to get beyond race and look to human issues. I think there is a lot we dont get in that clip...we are talking about in incident that occured in 1986 while she worked not as a federal employee but as a member of a non profit group helping farmers. And even though she felt condescended she didnt abandon the individual. And I would love to know the truth but the interview account from CNN showed that the white lawyer she referred the farmer to ultimately abanoned him and she had to step in at the last minute and give him the help they needed. She also explains she became friends with this white farmer and his wife and that her comments were given to unite...to serve as an example to look beyond racism. I think that is consistent with what I saw.

People change.

In 1986, I was 20 years old, and in college. All I knew about black people was what my parents had told me: they were lazy, dirty, stole, and committed crimes. There was 1 black kid in my high school out of over 2,000 kids.

I started working for HUD and actually MET some black people. What I learned was that my parents were, by and large, wrong. I met a woman who was a single mom and worked 60 hours a week so her kids could attend private school. She was NOT lazy. The black women in my office taught me to type business letters, and proof them. They were NOT dirty, and they never stole. They included me in their gossip and social occasions. They were good people, who worked hard, raised good families, and paid taxes--contrary to what I'd been told.

In 1986, a lot of us grew up in neighborhoods that were segregated. We only knew people of our own kind. Many of us made assumptions about the people we didn't know and had never met, based upon how we were raised, and what the people in our communities and families told us.

People grow up and change. That was what this woman was attempting to describe at this meeting:

"I used to think like this, and this experience taught me that I was wrong in my thinking."

Grim...she wasnt a government official when it occured. She agrees with you...even as an employee at a non-profit group she shouldnt have discriminated. She was trying to make that point. I think in peoples zeal and rush to one up the NAACPs condemnation of the Tea Party, the truth is being lost in a 1.5 minute snippet of a video on utube.

From the story:

So, that's a private sector job? That's news to me.

She was telling a story about something that happened 24 years ago, not an action she took as the USDA's Director of Rural Development for Georgia.

Did you even read your own article?

Not that Caz needs me to argue her arguemnt...but are YOU willing to even consider the possibility that MAYBE you jumped the gun on this? What if unequivocable proof were given to show her periods of employment with the government?

The example of racism in this clip is not in her comments...it is in the actions of the audience. Something that Ben jealous also pointed out.

I'm not defending discrimination. I'm defending her because she's been misrepresented. As it turns out she wasn't a public official. And yes, what she may have done initially was wrong, but in the spirit of reconcilliation and understanding, if this helped her to change her mind, and his farm was saved ANYWAY then there's a saying in my country which I think rings true here now. What is Verby is Verby - Whats past is past.

What nobody is mentioning was that her remarks were intended to show the members of the NAACP at that meeting that poverty transcends race.

She engaged in racial discrimination, therefore, she should not be allowed to hold a jod as a director of any government agency.

As for your comment that this was to "one up" the NAACP, may I remind you that the NAACP's charges were a steaming pile of manure that have absolutely no foundation in truth, while the NAACP is riddled with racism within it's ranks.

Do you think that repeating the same phrase will somehow make it more true?

C'mon, racist Andrew Breibart edited the video. Did the HAACP see the entire Video, have you seen it?

i don't believe the press is "aligned" with the NAACP. and in case you didn't realize it, this has been brought to the public. i think the entire video should be viewed, btw.
we have msnbc and we have fox. i hope you believe that both are biased and culpable.

I thought the whole transcript was just as damning. Her view of white people and black people made me cringe. We are all Americans! We are all equal. I am so sick of the division. Everyone should be treated as human beings. This woman treated this farmer differently based only on the color of his skin. That is wrong and should not be tolerated or excused in this day and age.

I wonder if you'd be so generous if this was a conservative we were discussing.

Good God, dude...she exposed herself to the world to try and help people to learn from her mistake. Instead of beating her to a pulp with a sledgehammer you might want to embrace her for her example. You might want to express appreciation for her honesty, for her candor, and for her willingness to speak in front of a GROUP of NAACP members and set an example of growth. You know...its just a thought...

And of COURSE I realize the NAACP comments regarding the Tea Party were bull****. Its viable to call the NAACP out and let the Tea Party position stand on its own merits. Arguing against a steaming pile of **** with your own version of steaming **** makes you just as dirty, dontcha think?

This didn't HAPPEN in this day and age. It happened 24 years ago. Try to keep up, Barb.

Facts be damned.

That statement is another example of the inherent dishonesty that the progressive movement thrives on. If you can't dispute the facts, just attack and smear...

Keep up the good work comrade... Karl Marx would be proud if he were alive today.

Actually, I've been even more pissed about white people who were attacked for using the word niggardly by morons who thought it was a racial slur.

Controversies about the word "niggardly" - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"I bet that even as I write, some adolescent boys, in the stairwell of some high school somewhere in America, are accusing each other of being niggardly, and sniggering at their own outrageous wit. I bet ... Wait a minute. 'Sniggering'? Oh, my God...."--John Derbyshire
