PHOENIX (AP) - The number of deaths among illegal immigrants crossing the Arizona desert from Mexico is soaring so high this month that the medical examiner's office that handles the bodies is using a refrigerated truck to store some of them, the chief examiner said Friday.

The bodies of 40 illegal immigrants have been brought to the office of Pima County Medical Examiner Dr. Bruce Parks since July 1. At that rate, Parks said the deaths could top the single-month record of 68 in July 2005 since his office began tracking them in 2000.

"Right now, at the halfway point of the month, to have so many is just a very bad sign," he said. "It's definitely on course to perhaps be the deadliest month of all time."

From Jan. 1 to July 15, the office has handled the bodies of 134 illegal immigrants, up from 93 at the same time last year and 102 in 2008. In 2007, when the office recorded the highest annual deaths of illegal immigrants, 140 bodies had been taken there through July 15.

Parks said his office, which handles immigrant bodies from three counties, is currently storing roughly 250 bodies and had to start using a refrigerated truck because of the increase in immigrant deaths this month.

More reason to make immigration reform happen. More reason to make it harder to be here illegally, to work here... to save their lives.

Please don't pretend that somebody who supports the torture - err excuse me - 'interrogation techniques' in Guantanamo gives too ****s about illegal immigrants dying. You only making yourself look even more dishonest than you already are.

I believe in saving lives, you believe in the rights of terorist to kill Americans. Whose the dishonest one?

He wouldn't sue them unless he and his legal council saw rightful violations of the consitution concerning this law. He's a constiutional professor and lawyer, he's probably right and the courts will decide. You snicker now but trust me he's right on this issue and will win in court.

I believe in saving lives,

No. You believe in using people's deaths for political expedience. You don't give a **** about illegal immigrants anymore than I honestly care about some missing kid in nowhere'sville USA. Your 24 style scenarios don't exist in real life. Get over it. The best part about it is you make a thread on these people under such false pretenses. Do you make a thread on all the fishermen who die every year? What about the dozens of people who die in California from street violence? No, this is just a thread you made to push an agenda. You don't really care about 'saving lives'. Don't insult your own intelligence.

So now he is a constitutional lawyer and not a politician. Wish he would go into practice.

On the lawsuit, I hope it goes straight to the Supreme Court as it will get there anyway. Might as well save the time and money. But maybe wants to keep this afloat for the 2010 elections. What do you think the professor wants.

Yeah, okay dude, you are quickly falling into "obvious troll" land, I don't believe anyone sucks the koolaide quite this hard...

What do people fishing dying every year matter? Is there some failed Federal enforcement of law that is causing them to die? IS there some failed enforcement of law creating conditions where innocent people are dying on the streets??? Your analogies fall far short of mattering, well to anyone other then yourself.

Who said anything about "24 Scenario's"? I support breaking the ****ing kneecaps fo terrorist if there is a probability they have information that will save the lives of my Fellow Americans. Cause ya know what? A Terrorist ain't got no ****ing rights, he sure as **** wouldn't care about your rights if he had you in his "custody". Ever watch the Daniel Pearl video? You should.

I care about people dying in the desert because of failed Gov't policies, and this circle jerk punting of the issue instead of sealing the borders, and making life so hard on illegals and those that hire them that it becomes untenable to be here... we do nothing and people die. Or are treated as low-wage serfs doing **** work for pennies.

You owe me an apology sir.

We should set up some water stations or something so they can survive the crossing.

Anyone who takes this suggestion seriously needs another beer.

I believe that the government should employ FedEx and UPS to deliver packages to all of the illegals. They seem to have no troubles finding them...

No, that merely encourages them, and makes those putting the water out liable if the water is gone and someone dies of thirst.

Student loan people. Seriously, those ****ers could have found Bin Laden in a week.

More proof that this 'saving lives' argument is nothing more than a farce and your OP was full of **** to begin with. You created an OP appealing to the notion that you somehow care about the people risking their lives to cross the border when in reality all you care about is getting them out of the country. The fact that these people are escaping horrible condition in a horrible country where they're more likely to die and the risk of crossing the border to them is minimal compared to the risk of living in day to die violence they're coming from.

More false appeals to emotion. What? You're going to tell us some sob story about being fondled by terrorists next? Learn to debate. Your OP was full of ****. End of story.

And this is where your dihonest shines through. Have YOU yourself made the argument that these people are bad for OUR economy because they're sending money back to Mexico? Have you yourself made the argument that these people are bad for OUR economy because their jobs could be taken up by Americans? Obviously if they have JOBS and are sending money back to their families, they're not making pennies. Their effect on our economy would be minimal? See how dihonest you are now?

You owe me an appology sir.

I don't apologize to dishonest people.

Ahh the intolerant liberal all angry cause I made an argument that he cannot refute without personally attacking my character. It's been fun watching you get all spun up Hautey, but honestly, I could give a rats ass less what you think.

The problem you have is, and I know I touched a raw nerve here, is that if people start seeing border enforcement as a LIFE SAVING measure, that might generate support for such.. and you cannot have that. Way to show how everything you do, think or care about is about politics. I'm looking at ways of saving lives, you worry about the political angle.

Considering Obama's version of "reform" is amnesty or some form of it I do not want reform anytime soon. I simply do not trust him to adequately secure the border and crack down on scum who hire illegals.

As for for individuals dying while trespassing into the US I can honestly say that I do not feel sorry for people dying while in the commission of a crime. Would you care if a trespasser was shot? Would you care that someone trying break into your home was shot?

You do have a valid point, these ARE criminals, who through their own failure to abide by the law died in the course of commiting a crime... way to go James... bastard, bringing LAW into this.

HOWEVER, I'm taking the stance that we could prevent these, okay, criminals from dying by proper border enforcement. Besides, think of the savings to the coroners office!

.
I'm calling your BS. I live in AZ and have put up with the illegal problem for years. I don't care if they die in the desert. It is one less problem when they do. Except for the coroner workload, the added taxpayer expense of those we rescue and yes send back.
Mexico and its problem is not the US problem. But hey, AZ would be glad to accept your donation to offset the cost we occur helping those caught out in the desert, without federal assistance.

If the border was secured, less people would die.

Notice you don't give any solutions, just a rant about the poor mexican.

Are you really that dense or are you pretending because i'm not sure anymore? You just supported the point I made. Here I'll put the precise sentence where I exposed your dishonesty:

No, this is just a thread you made to push an agenda.

Again, you're not really interested in whether these people die or not. Even though more people die by staying in Mexico than by coming to America due to drug violence. See how dihonest you are yet?

See my point? Conservatives/people pushing for the Arizona law don't really care about Mexicans dying crossing the border. Using the fact that a few die to push their agenda is simply dishonest. Now watch Vicky thank his post. ;)

You are the one who is dishonest. You give no solution. Bad mouth those that want secured borders. So what agenda are you pushing? I would guess open borders, bail out mexico. Your bs doesn't work with me. How come you think I am a conservative? Just becuase I don't support illegals in the US. Still no solution from you as I would expect. You don't have any.

Come back when you have something worth responding back on. Maybe one of your lib friends with thank you.

600K and we have what 11 million illegals here. So that is 6 cents each. Wow that will put employers on their heels!!

The audits have been very sucessful.

Over the past year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has conducted audits of employee files at more than 2,900 companies. The agency has levied a record $3 million in civil fines so far this year on businesses that hired unauthorized immigrants, according to official figures. Thousands of those workers have been fired, immigrant groups estimate.

Employers say the audits reach more companies than the work-site roundups of the administration of President George W. Bush. The audits force businesses to fire every suspected illegal immigrant on the payroll— not just those who happened to be on duty at the time of a raid — and make it much harder to hire other unauthorized workers as replacements. Auditing is “a far more effective enforcement tool,” said Mike Gempler, executive director of the Washington Growers League, which includes many worried fruit growers.
