Obama issued a new moratorium today. I am in shock, this idiot hasn't learned yet. A federal judge overturned his last one so what does he do? Change a few words and issue another one.

This man should be impeached.

To the mods, I don't understand the posting of news where it should be etc. If this is in the wrong area or posted incorrectly for some reason feel free to move it. I don't post much new news so I haven't learned the ropes of posting here yet. I looked and didn't see another thread on this so if there is and I missed it, just let me know via a post in this thread and you can lock or merge at will.

I've never seen contempt like this for the courts as coming from actual politicians. They lost on gun control in Chicago and passed a new bill anyway, they lost on the moratorium and passed a new one anyway. Like spoiled children they don't get their way and almost dare the court to enforce the decision, I hope this backfires in a big way and that legal consequences follow.

I might be mistaken but didn't a report come out not too long ago showing just how many oil rigs could be at risk of the same fate as the BP rig? I think it was in the 1,000s.

Obviously there is no proven plan of action if a blowout preventer fails, why not just chill and get some revised safety regulations and plans enacted before we start drilling again? I thought it was a wise move.

And in 60 years of drilling in the gulf, this is the first time a blowout and oil leak of this magnitude has happened. I think playing chicken little this quickly is a little bit jumping the gun.

I haven't seen anything like that. Anything saying such is speculative at best and dishonest at worst, this was a freak accident nothing more nothing less.

And obviously the entire economy is at risk and obviously the current class of morons don't care. Obviously the court got it right the first time and obviously these childish control freaks aren't going to accept anything less than getting their way. If we had tried this as individuals we'd be guilty of contempt of court and there is no defending this.

I guess jobs are like roaches to Obama.

If they're really concerned about drilling under water then they should just permit drilling on land instead - and encourage everyone to relocate for those jobs.

Because oil rigs don't "chill." They move on if there is no work. A rig costs between 250,000 and 500,000 dollars a day to keep in place. What company can afford to pay for a rig to sit out there doing nothing while the gov't tries to figure out what to do? That's insane!

During the "chill" period tens of thousands would lose their jobs. I will say, BCR, that you have the best interests in mind and I appreciate that, but we can't just stop drilling. It doesn't work that way. BOP's practically never fail so nobody even considered what to do if one didn't. It was like the sun coming up in the morning, we take it for granted as it always happens. Nobody has a plan if the sun doesn't come up one morning.

And truth be known, we don't know why the BOP failed. My dad said they found 2 strings of drill pipe in there for some reason. If that's the case, the BOP wouldn't be able to shut off the flow. That's HUMAN error, not mechanical. No amount of regulation will take the human error out of the human.

We'd still lose the best paying jobs under that scenario though, the tenders and divers make quite a bit more than the rig hands. While I will concede that losing those guys only would be much better than losing the whole thing, when six-figure a year incomes dry up it's still not a good thing.

I think Bill Maher said it best when jobs conflict with the environment "F### your jobs". To me environment comes first, oil really has been the root of so many of our problems.

**** Bill Maher, he's an idiot and his opinion is almost always from a position stuck on stupid.

What's this "our" when speaking about resources? It's the oil companies resource until they sell it, then it's the buyer's resource. Money talks.

so i guess we need a few more disasters to convince you?

So what's your opinion on the Obama administration completely ignoring the court decision and doing what was overturned anyway? This is about that issue.

The environment isn't a resource, it's an ecosystem. Resources are those things which can be derived from it of some utility.

right, the beautiful coastline, part of our environment, isn't a resource. of course it is. tourism is big business. the gulf is a resource which provides jobs.

You betcha!! Where, pray tell, is any evidence that the Minerals Management Service has been charged with reviewing the safety of every single well in the Gulf??

Interesting aside: On June 10th, the MMS changed its name to Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE). Apparently you really can run and hide at the same time. Where are the hearings with these jamokes? Ridiculous.

Not even just *directly* related to the oil-industry jobs and income, either.
Think of it - every time a business or corporation dries out or frizzles up and leaves there are countless other businesses who depended on them as a customer base who suddenly have no market to provide for.

What other industries depend on the rigging-industry? What towns and small shops cater to them on their time home, in port?
Whether people like the industry or not doesn't matter - many other people depend on these people to have continuing income to keep their restaurants and small shops up and running. These other business and people don't depend on "the fact that they're the oil-business" - they depend on "the fact that they have money to spend in my store"

The oil spill, directly, is bad enough - killing off people's livelihood (food supply for home/restaurants - fishing and so on) . . . and it's making tourism suffer, as well. . . as a result - businesses that depended *on* those to keep their market open and flowing are suffering significantly. . . and so on.
Instead of trying to contain the destruction they're furthering it  I don't get it. If they're getting BP to support everyone who was *directly* affected then who will help these non-oil by proxy businesses and people who will suffer because of the moratorium? It's fighting fire with fire.

I think Bill Maher can kiss my ****ing ass too. What kind of car does he drive?

No, a beach isn't a resource, the sand is as are the fish in that water, the water itself once you process it, even the grass. But the beach itself has no utility other than a nice relaxing day.
the gulf is a resource which provides jobs.
No, the gulf is a resource rich area, everything contained within it are resources. They are not "ours", they are "theirs" until "they" sell the resources to "individuals".

Pretty sure Maher is smarter than Glenn Beck and Billo.

Also it would be nice if we wouldn't treat everything in the world as a resource, This isn't "our" planet. We are only ants compared to what the planet has been through and it won't be long before Earth chews us up and spits us out, just another extinct species. We can however delay this by actually using our heads. Clearly we need to lose our dependence on fossil fuels, maybe we won't run out in our lifetime but it will happen in our kids or maybe our grand-kids.

Ok, well BCR, since you went back and edited your post I'll edit mine.

Today will be the last day you will fill your car with gas. When it runs out, you are done. Do something, rather than just babble like a typical lib, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, starting with yourself as an example. WHAT? You don't want to do that? Yea, I didn't think so, so either walk the walk or shut ya trap.

Liberals are really good at telling others how they should live, while not wanting to live that way themselves. Case in point, Al Gore and BCR.

They're good at wanting taxes, tax other people, but when you tell them, "Hey, you want the gov't to have so much money, give them everything you have as an example" they crawfish back so fast they trip on themselves.

No, Maher is a braindead reactionist. He isn't smart or even funny really, the guy is a wash out.

Everything that lives uses resources, this is part of nature, it is an untenable argument to go against that. When an animal eats it has utilized a resource, when we refine something to gain utility we use a resource, that's life.

I have made steps to reduce the use of fossil fuels in my family. We have a fuel efficent car and we don't drive nearly as much as we used to. We also bike much more. For you to tell me I haven't made steps is just laughable because last I checked you don't know anything about me.

and of course I realize we can't just drop fossil fuels in a matter of days. Still it doesn't even look like we are trying to ween ourselves of off it. In 1984 the average mpg in a vehicle was 20, fast forward to 2004 and your looking at 20.4! A .4 increase! I'll be damned, internet was created along with the modern computer and cell phones yet we still hadn't figure out how to use less fuel.
