That's okay. Switzerland's political system is complicated enough even for us to understand, I don't really expect outsiders to really grasp how it actually works.

Totally fair, but you'd at least expect them to admin that they don't know what they're talking about, right?
I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

All it takes is some quick research online to learn the basics. I'm sure once they do that, they'll see what I mean. Our system is very complicated in many ways, especially at the cantonal level, but the federal system is not so difficult to understand. We're the last bastion of direct democracy on the planet, I can totally dig that people used to a different sort of democracy have a hard time understanding what it means in practice.

How do you know they're not Discordians in disguise?

Seriously, tho, that is but one sect. And a Shiite one to boot. I thought the main problem was with fundamentalist Sunni Islam? At least that's what I've been led to believe by all those rightwing think tanks.

Right wing think tanks eh? The 'twelvers' make up around 85% of all Shi'ia sect, which is the majority of Muslims do you dispute that?

What the heck are you talking about? The majority of Muslims are Sunni, not Shiite.

It doesn't change the fact that your original post that I took issue with was blown out of the water by the existence of the twelvers.

I'm not a fan of anti-drug legislation but to try to compare trafficking in Schedule II and higher narcotics (which is the only conceivable way you could get a life sentence for it) to consensual sexual intercourse is laughable and just goes to show how desperate you are to defend a barbaric ideology.

You're one of those people who doesn't see the difference between forcing women to wear the burka in public and forcing women to wear a top in public huh?

The point about colonial laws is that they were a product of our culture and religion, the same culture that produced the Constitution and the United States.
The last time I checked John Locke wasn't a puritan. Furthermore; laws that existed before the formation of the United States prove nothing about the United States.

Fundamentalist ideas, or whatever you want to call them, don't necessarily make a society incapable of democratic self-rule.
Quakers had more of an influence than the Puritans and Quakers were socially liberal.
