Chicago approves new handgun restrictions

The second amendment is the most disproportionately hyped amendment... The original rationale of allowing the people to overthrow the government if need be is no longer relevant. Military capabilities just radically exceed anything you could counter with over the counter firearms. The notion that a gun provides for self defense is highly suspect. Most studies show that it actually makes you less safe, not more. Even if it was effective for self defense, stranger violence practically doesn't exist at all in the US. Your odds of being murdered by a stranger are approximately 1 in a million each year... So, it basically just comes down to people like guns because they think they're cool or they have some insecurity they're trying to make up for or whatever.

So, fine, we get it. Some people like guns and the right to have them is protected by the constitution. Cool beans. Nobody is trying to take away the right to have guns, they just don't want you to use them responsibly and to put some limits on them in high population density places where it's really easy for a stray bullet to hit somebody. No big deal, just chill out and focus your energies on something useful instead...

let me clue you in-who is going to tell the army to attack citizens

say its a majority of congress

how long would the civil war last if those members of congress all got a 30-06 lobotomy.

To say no one is trying to take guns away is such a blatant lie it disqualifies you from having any credibility on this subject. There are dozens of politicians in congress and the senate who have stated they want to ban guns. DIane FeinSwine admitted that if she had the votes in 1994, the federal government would have confiscated ALL semi autos which includes a majority of 22 rifles, pistols and half the shotguns used in sporting clays and skeet.

So wrong I hardly know where to begin.

An armed citizenry is harder for an oppressive gov't to push around than an unarmed citizenry... offending politicians might eat a bullet.

Military too mighty? That's what everyone said about the military of the British Empire in 1776. Look up Fourth Generation Warfare.

Self-defense vs accidents, crime, etc: Various studies have shown that guns are used defensively somewhere between 4 and 50 times as often as fatalities resulting from crime or accidents. Fatal accidents are actually very rare and have been on the decline for a century. Actual children (minors) dying in gun accidents is so rare as to be statistically insignificant.

You have about a 40-60% chance of being selected as the victim of a violent crime at some point during your lifetime. I've already been targeted more than once, and I was glad to be armed, as it enabled me to defuse the situation without anyone getting dead.

A number of prominent politicians on the Left have expressed desires to severely curtail if not effectively abolish private gun ownership in America. The fact that they don't have the political clout to do so any time soon is a comfort but the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

I've posted stats and sources supporting all of this before, and I'll be glad to do so again if I need to.

YOU may think this is a non-issue, but millions of Americans feel otherwise... thank you so much for implying 90 million American gun owners are silly paranoids worried about something trivial... you know, only the very Amendment of the Bill of Rights that comes just after freedom of speech/religion/press.

That's not the ONLY reason the constitution protects thee right to arms, and it is isn't the ONLY reason the militia exists.
That and there's no way to argue that there will never be a need to overthrow the government.

Military capabilities just radically exceed anything you could counter with over the counter firearms.
Really. Explain how we lost the war in Iraq and how we're losing in Afghanistan.

The notion that a gun provides for self defense is highly suspect. Most studies show that it actually makes you less safe, not more
This is unsupportable.

Prove this.

This is nothing but bigoted opinion.

Given your argument so far -- no, no you don't.

Nobody is trying to take away the right to have guns...
Really? Seems to me there was a court case just a few weeks ago that overturned laws that did just that.

they just don't want you to use them responsibly and to put some limits on them in high population density places where it's really easy for a stray bullet to hit somebody
Who here is against laws against discharging weapons within city limits w/o a lawful reason to do so?
If that's all the restriction the anti-gun side wanted, there's be no problem.

you aren't aware of the "if I feel its a right" it must be in the constitution?

sort of like the general welfare clause authorizing income redistribution and free health care

Uh, no. I stated that they were mentioned in court rulings. Loving and Sharp to be specific in answering American's question.

The "right" rises from the right to contract which actually is in the constitution in Article 1.
