But I'm not going to jump on some Byrd bashing bandwagon solely because he used to be in the KKK for like a year when he was in his early 20s. Did he used to have racist views? Without a ****ing doubt. He admits to it, which is more than I can say for most politicians... hell, most PEOPLE period. Perhaps he still held those racist views to his death, I don't know. What I DO know is that his policies changed. And I really don't give a flying patootie what someone's personal beliefs are as long as they don't try and make me and the rest of the country abide by them. And, after the civil rights movement, he didn't. His policies changed with the times... which, again... is more than I can say for most politicians or people in general.

You want to bash him, then bash him for something significant, I'm sure there's a ****load of stuff out there. But don't bash such an icon simply for being a member of a racist organization for all of a year in his youth.
I couldn't have said it better myself. It's ironic seeing conservatives bashing Byrd for his racist past, when conservatives used to defend Strom Thurmond so vigorously for similar past sins.

I'm not a big fan of the "kind of pork", but bashing Byrd for views he held forty years ago and has since renounced is just silly.

Hate to say I told you so... but anyone that thought a Democratic Governor and a Democratic Secretary of State would allow a special election to replace Byrd in November was a bit naive.

“The State Code is an interesting document. Within Chapter 3 that focuses on elections, there are several sections that determine how vacancies are filled.

“Section 3-10-3 states that for terms with more than two years and six months remaining, such as this one with Senator Byrd, the Governor will appoint a replacement who serves the unexpired term until a successor has been elected.

“But that election will not be the 2010 General election. Part of this same section of code, requires the candidate to have filed during the filing period. That filing period has already passed. There was a legal case in 1994 decided by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals that up held that position of requiring candidates to file during the filing period.

“That means the election for the unexpired term would be the next election cycle which would take place in 2012. Candidates will be nominated in the primary and elected in the general of 2012.

Take blacks for example. They are treated like everyone else for the most part, but to hear their leader you'd think nothing has changed. It's all just a business to extract money out of people. So as long as it's good political business for the left, homophobia will remain just as wide spread racism has remained the mantra of the race leaders.

People are silly comparing Strom Thurmond to Robert Byrd. Strom Thurmond died a racist. Robert Byrd spent the better part for the last 50 years trying to improve race relations.

how does supporting affirmative action and making excuses for black crime rates help improve race relations?

Sources for any of this? Or are you leading to another post where you complain about the black guy who got a job you feel was yours?

The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet the Makeout Hobo, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

    This should be a poll...

By the way, West Virginia is not a southern state.
Then what is it? It was south of the border states and is south of the Mason-Dixon Line...
