Official approval has been given for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography.

The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.

Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up

BBC News - Sex domain gets official approval

How pathetic. Either ICANN is run by idiots, or domain squatters have managed to corrupt the system. The only purpose of the domain is make companies purchase yet another domain location, and give leverage to the morons who want to censor the net.

Idiots.

Well, as someone who knows of porn sites that bypass even the more stringent user-controlled security systems, I saw this evolution take place.

This might be useful if all the porn scum could be convinced to stick to the .xxx domains so people wouldn't have to worry about accidentally clicking porn links. Unfortunately, I highly doubt that's going to happen.

Then hopefully all the porn sites will be put in that domain, so those of us who want can block them, to prevent stumbling on them by accident.

Darn. I was hoping for .cum as a play on .com

What's the problem? You wont get blinded. Just press "back" on your browser. There really isn't an excuse to make it easier for governments to censor things they have no business controlling. Anyway, .xxx wont change anything. If the owners know this will put there website immediately on the censor black list in some countries, then not all of them will risk that.

Governments have perfectly valid reasons for attempting to halt the spread of pornography. It is corrosive to the moral fiber of nations.

Seems like a good idea to me IF all porn are REQUIRED to use it, otherwise its not news at all, just another meaningless address among billions

I think this is a pretty good idea. It clearly designates websites as pornographic. If they made it mandatory that all websites that host pornography be under the .xxx domain then I think things like child porn could be more easily removed (not only because if they break the law and host on .com they can be found, but also registering them on .xxx would be easier to find as well). This gives people the complete ability to block all porn websites. Honestly, I'd say it's great to go one step further and have people somehow legally register with .xxx to 100% confirm that they are of legal age to buy and view porn. The "if you are under 18 leave now" stickers aren't very affective.

I don't mind the domain. What I do mind is if all adult sites are required to use it. Hopefully, the will not be.

why do you mind that? You thnking over regulation, to much control or unfair to make all the current domains buy new ones?

All of the above. I don't like the idea that they can force them all into a certain area and then be able to enact stricter controls that way. Any time the government starts corralling, I get wary.

If porn and the sex industry can be successfully controlled or even ended, then that is what should happen. It is exploitative. Apparently 60% of women who work in the sex industry are not doing it willingly. And, then there are the children working in the sex industry...

Well maybe its wishful thinking but at least in the US I don't think it will happen, over regulating it, too much money involved. Currently I like the idea but i do agree with you if they started censoring it I'm not for it, barring things that are already illegal of course

how is it "corrosive to the moral fiber of nations"

like to see proof of that, also if thats true the problem is those that are doing that NOT the industry, it is also illegal in the US for children to work in the industry so again thats a different argument. I agree women shouldn't be force and kids are not to be involved but again different topic.

also "exploitative" is totally subjective, people think beauty pageants exploit, cheerleading exploits etc doesn't mean its true, the ultimate judgment IMO is that of the person involved NOT an outsider.

how is it "corrosive to the moral fiber of nations"

It is exploitative and degrading. It encourages people to treat their sex partners like disposable toys. It encourages unhealthy sexual behaviors. It distracts people from healthy sexual relationships with real people.

thats a fair opinion your allowed to have. The exact opposite opinion can also be true though.

Who is to say what is healthy and not healthy?

I'd like to see that, because if porn weren't degrading and corrupting garbage, I wouldn't have to waste my time denouncing it or put up with the ridicule of the seemingly endless hordes of people who think having sex for money is just peachy.

Who is to say what is healthy and not healthy?

Those with the facts. We know smoking is unhealthy because facts prove it. Anyone can ignore the facts and say "smoking isn't unhealthy" or say "smoking is good for you!" However, to do so is to live in denial and cling to wishful thinking. Not all opinions are equal, but everyone has a right to their own.

It is just peachy. :)

There, you no longer have to waste your time trying to convince other people your opinion is right for everyone.

Heh. At least it's funny this time. The shrill ones are just tiresome.
