Re: Altered mural fuels racial debate in Prescott

Excuse me I have something to say here, I did not intend to use the term "red neck" to be any kind of racial, cultural, or social slur in any way. The comment was not directed any one group or person in particular, I used the term adding "itude" on the end because I intended it to be taken entirely humorously, making fun of myself and the town I lived it. If I, a white boy from Georgia and Arizona, who drinks while I shoot, shoots while I drink, kills and eats animals I find in my backyard, who smokes, dips, and drinks whiskey all at the same time can't use the word "red-neck" as a joke in reference to a funny story, well then I don't know what the world's coming to.

So I ask cooler heads to prevail and those arguing that some offense has been made, remember all those time we've seen stories of over the top reactions to minor or non-existant racial slurs. And those arguing its no big deal, well kudos keep at it.

I use racial slurs all the time without any intent to give offense. I'm not offended by your use of the word "redneck", but still consider it to belong to the same class of words as other racial slurs.

BS. Redneck is not a race, but an attitude. Nice try, and thanx for playing.

School Board revisted the issue and voted Not to have the mural changed. Saw it on Channel 5 news Phoenix.
So not much of a issue anymore.

The words "spic" and "wetback" aren't racial terms, but I wouldn't recommend casual usage of them. "Spic" is actually linguistic; it refers to how the native Spanish speaker would pronounce "speak," as in "I no spic Ingles." Spanish speakers aren't a race, and Spanish is a European language, at that. "Wetback" refers to people who emigrated from Mexico to the United States, and is associated with the water crossing in the Rio Grande. Anyone can migrate in such a way, and the descendants of those people born in the U.S. aren't wetbacks, since they didn't emigrate.

They're probably used with racial intent, since people perceive mestizos (properly Indians) as "Spanish" and as immigrants, but those aren't in line with the accurate origins or meanings.

Um... I'm pretty sure it is still an issue.
Discrimination against minorities is making a comeback; I find it very ominous that conservative municipal and state-level politicians and community leaders are now finding it politically advantageous to be openly racist.

I think its because the balance of power between races is starting to shift due to changes in demographics and white people will soon no longer be a majority vs all other races.

Unfortunately, they'll still be the privileged class and comprise the power structure, though.
I mean, whites weren't the "majority race" in the deep South during the 1800s, either.
Blacks outnumbered them many times over.
It doesn't mean whites weren't still perfectly capable of oppressing everyone around them.
They need not start up with their bull**** again; I don't care how much of a "minority" they become.

Of COURSE it is...especially when USED as an ethnic slur. THere are many blacks who use the word 'nigger'...that doesnt make it any less racist when someone else uses it in a derogitory manner towards blacks. Redneck is no different.

Wait...do you mean the whites or the blacks?
OK...seriously...I get your meaning...but MAYBE the world would be a better place if we meant EVERYONE and had/have a higher expectation OF everyone...
