AP) COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A GOP lawmaker hoping to be the state's first female governor is getting publicity for all the wrong reasons.

First a political blogger said he and Rep. Nikki Haley had an inappropriate physical relationship when he worked for her in 2007. Then a lobbyist said he had a one-night stand with her in a Salt Lake City hotel room during a school choice conference.

On Thursday, state Sen. Jake Knotts used an ethnic slur to refer to Haley, whose parents immigrated from India.

"We've got a raghead in Washington, we don't need a raghead in the Statehouse," Knotts said on an Internet political talk show. He later apologized, saying the remarks were meant as a joke.

If it isn't a microphone "on" or a politician making a "joke" it seems we have an overabundance of diarrhea of the mouth of politicians.

Just wow roles eye. I bet that made Obama feel welcomed by his colleagues sarcasm. Wonder how Jindal and Mr Elision feel about this type of comment.

Jindal isn't Arab

He didn't even use the slur correctly.

Jindal is of Indian descent, and raghead can refer to people from India. Trivial point, but there it is.

This makes me wonder if politicians ever think before they speak.

So much stupid. :doh

Indians and Arabs are not even close to being similar. If anyone eqates "raghead" to Indians its just being sloppy.

Tex, we are well off topic. Can we both agree that the "raghead" comment was stupid at best?

No. Massively stupid would be better.

Again, going with the previous theme that we never agree. :D

First time I heard the term "raghead" was when a Brit was being insulting of an Indian. So you sir are wrong.

Actually he was. You should have corrected him. Dot head is the correct slur.

No, raghead is also used for Indians. Many Indians also wear turbans. So do Sikhs, which was who Jake Knotts was referring to when he made his statement. If you really believe that the term is not supposed to refer to Indians, then you don't get around much. I hear the term several times a week here in Houston, and at least one of them refers to Indians. In fact, raghead is used more than dot here in Houston. Of course, Houston is more of an international melting pot than Dallas, and that might explain our disagreement.

Considering the location, are you honestly this surprised.

No one says, "raghead", in New York? Some of the most racist people I've ever known came from New York.

I'm just glad that this is a Republican insulting a Republican. Can you imagine the crocodile tears if Haley were a Democrat?

Ive been called a spic, taco nigger, illegal, communist, raghead, terrorist, sand nigger and a whole host of others so Im not saying that. The difference is that I dont give a flying **** anymore this is way life and politics is, too many people whine like little babies. Stories like these serve nothing productive to stirr emotion. People hate other people the media seems to have yet to figure it out.

Rag heads here typically were used against Sikhs who are Indian

Basically it is used for anyone who typically uses a turban which is far more common on the Indian subcontinent then among Arabs

Sikhs are not indians. Jindal is an Indian. Therefore the slur does not work.

And Houston sucks :D

Sikhs are Indian, they are generally in the Indian state of Punjab. Which makes them Indian. What they are not is Hindu which is a religion not an ethnicitiy

So where do Sikhs come from? Sikhstan? No.. they come from India, hence they are Indian.. Now some Sikhs also come from Pakistan, since the area where Sikhs originate from is kinda disputed between India and Pakistan.

And Houston does suck, as does all of Texas. :)

As an expat Brit currently living in Tx (albeit not Houston), I can assure you that the entire EU sucks more than any other confederation of states anywhere in the world.

Not for this thread but plz do explain how it is better in another :)

And the battle continues for title of "The Worst State"

Just so you know - you're right that Arabs and Indians are different peoples. However, Sikhs (who are Indian) wear turbans and are frequently called "ragheads". Indeed, a Sikh in Arizona was murdered by idiot racists after 9/11 because they equated his Sikh attire to Arabic traditional garb.

So, it's misplaced, yes. But it's not as if racists are known for their intelligence (or their "good jokes").

You are correct, and that said people of Indian really do not see eye to eye with the Arabic people, hence waring India and Pakistan..oops Pakistan people are not Arabs but do practice Islam.
