That was before I knew this was going to go on until Christmas, but nice job trying to get Redress out of the corner he's painted himself into. LOL

Re: Feds open criminal probe of Gulf oil spill

I seemed to have rushed my OP, when I said that a criminal investigation was wrong. Since I posted it, I watched the news this morning, and there does seem to be a valid basis for a criminal investigation. This goes to the argument between the BP official and the Trans Ocean supervisor aboard the rig, who accused the BP brass of ordering shortcuts to be taken, shortcuts that endangered the rig and everybody on it. Just now, I searched for this information, and here it is.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37363106/ns/gulf_oil_spill/

So, to sum it up, I ran my big mouth before I had all the facts. It's not the first time that I have done this, and it probably won't be the last time either. However, I now stand corrected. I am now in favor of the criminal investigation, and if it shows this information to be true, then BP should be criminally charged with negligent homicide.

Let me also add that changing one's mind, due to new information, or information he had seen but had forgotten, is not flip flopping. It is called honesty. So my bad on the OP. Let the criminal investigation happen, and wherever it leads, let the appropriate action be taken.

I dunno, let's see if I can find anything about hte federal cleanup efforts in my first link:

Federal officials say cleaning up the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has already cost the government $87 million, making it the third-most expensive cleanup effort in the nation's history.
Yeah, looks like the federal government is doing something.

The second link, which shows just one example of a small part of the cleanup effort that you on the right are trying to claim has not started yet, started at least 3 weeks ago(it actually started before that). I have also shown 20k people working on the cleanup effort. Those darn facts just keep getting in your way.

Wait. She was not joking, you actually said that? And you are trying to suggest that the factual information I provided was paining myself into a corner?

And......we're back to the Huffington Post. Yummy.

I will direct you to the dozen or so links in this thread that you seem to want to ignore entirely.

OK, civil investigations? I can go with that. BP cut a lot of corners, misled the public, and in general, acted like complete douche bags. Sue them.

But for the criminal investigations, I have some questions. Which laws of the land did BP violate? Did they commit perjury by lying under oath? Did they offer any kind of hush money to keep the extent of the spill secret? Doesn't look like it to me.

I have a strong feeling that this is not so much about finding out if BP broke the law, but to mitigate the political damage to Obama over this incident, and also to have a scapegoat to point at. Yes, BP needs to be held accountable for the damage they caused, and made to pay a price, but a witch hunt of any kind is going to be detrimental to finding a solution that will keep this from ever happening again.

I will follow the discussion here, as I put on my flame proof suit.

    Article is here.

Forgive me for not reading the entire huge thread and perhaps saying what has already been said:

If corporations want to have all the benefits of being considered "persons" under the law, then they need to take the negatives as well, which include being liable for criminal activity.

No, we are back to the AP story that was reposted in the Huffington post. I know that is confusing, but actually click on the link and notice right under the headline is says:

Rough stuff to do. Might take you almost 5 seconds.

Or, it could mean he is not looking where the people are, or he is not knowing what to look for, or he is trying to score political points. I have documented cleanup efforts. Your claims otherwise are obviously inaccurate.
