Angry relatives of 9/11 victims last night clashed with supporters of a planned mosque near Ground Zero at a raucous community-board hearing in Manhattan.

After four hours of public debate, members of Community Board 1 finally voted 29-1 in support of the project. Nine members abstained, arguing that they wanted to table the issue and vote at a later date.

The board has no official say over whether the estimated $100 million mosque and community center gets built. But the panel's support, or lack of it, is considered important in influencing public opinion.

Completely disrespectful considering the motivation of the terrorists and disregarding the feelings of the victim's families.

If christian nutjobs had blown up the twin towers, would you be against building a church near Ground Zero?

Good point. How about a church near the building that was blown up in Oklahoma City?

I don't believe the city has a right to decide what a private owner decides to do with his or her land. This is just another example of the government deciding that we are too stupid to have our own land because the government knows better than we do.

Why look at the new WTC in NYC they have managed after 9 or 10 years to build a large hole that cost over 11 billion dollars:shock:

Did a little bit of google mapping, turns out there are about 7 churches in the immediate vicinity of the Oklahoma City National Memorial‎ and hundreds of churches in the surrounding areas. Well guess we better tear them down.

The Muslims building the mosque near the WTC have every right to do so. If they bought the property and own it then the government has no say in the matter. People and religious groups have the right to sovereignly own their property. However, I do think this was an arrogant and foolish decision at the hands of those building the mosque to place it near the WTC. Many will see it as a spiteful action and highly disrespectful regardless of the Muslim community's intent. It is a stupid decision to build the mosque there, but they have the freedom to make that stupid decision.

Self professed radical Christians bent on killing American's and ending our way of life, who video tape themselves and have in the past blown themselves up in the hopes of taking innocent passers buy out with them? Absolutely.

What Church was McVeigh part of and if the rest of the church believed or believes still as he does ... no Church near Oklahoma City.

The problem with your little hypotheticals is it's a little more difficult to find Christians blowing people up. Why not ask about the killings of the abotion clinics, or their blowing up, fires, etc. I think you'd find most if not all would condemn such acts. Let me know when members of that same Church is going to be build next to an Abortion clinic.

I have no problem with a mosque being built in NYC - I just have a problem with it being put so close to ground zero. If the group who wants to build this wants to promote outreach - they should outreach to their brethren who are continuing to plan and execute bombings and terrorist activities in the name of Islam.

It can be as disrespectful as it wants. It doesn't matter. Legally, we can't do anything about it. Not without violating our own integrity and resolve.

Believe me, developing property of any kind is a nightmare.

Bureaucrats are slow, uncooperative, and you have to go through dozens of departments to get to the starting line. That being the point where you turn the first shovel of dirt. You are at their mercy. The waiting game unfortunately bankrupts some people.

I listened to some guys that developed land in the 50's years back... oh those were the days.

And that is one of the biggest reasons bureaucrats don't deserve a say to what happens on private land. They don't care about speed because they will always have a source of income but many private businesses and such don't have unlimited wealth.....

The mosque isn't being built at ground zero. It's a couple blocks away.

How big a "no-muslim zone" would you like to establish, OP? Six blocks? A mile? Ten miles?

They're already there; the old mosque is just a few blocks farther. They just want to move into a newer bigger building.

Some of their members died on 9/11 as well, since many of them work and live in that area.

The idea that "Muslim = terrorist" seems so against everything we're supposed to stand for.

I don't know, we've always been kinda racist. But in spite of that we've pushed for freedom above all else. So while maybe we can think Muslim=terrorist; legally there's not a damned thing we can do about it.

I oppose the new location of the mosque — they should put it on top of the new world trade center and commemorate the memory of the many innocent Muslims who were murdered there on 9/11. Clearly many Americans don't understand the difference between Islam and the vicious ideology preached by Al Qaeda and such a mosque might help us to appreciate the distinction.

If people are allowed to prevent this mosque from being built, then the terrorists have won.

He wasn't but Far Left nutjobs love pretending he was a Christian terrorist even though he cited no scripture or religious justification.

6 is good. 2 blocks away is far too close.

Oh yes. Let's just ignore what the Qur'an actually says and what millions of Muslims are taught. Because some are good we should just ignore the motivations of the others.

Anyone who actually thought about this and took into account the victim's families feelings wouldn't say something so ignorant.

So how big a "no-muslim zone" is appropriate?

I answered that already.

And its not a no Muslim zone. Its a no Mosque zone. Please be more careful in your reading.

It's private land and they have the right to do so.

However, it's tacky and incredibly stupid. A decision like this may invoke some serious vandalism in the wee hours of the morning with many blind eyes watching.

When you do something idiotic and unpopular, prepare for a backlash, even if you are legally within the right.

I can't pretend that I don't understand why people would feel sensitive about this, because I do, but at the same time the property owner has a right to build a mosque there if they want to.

I do think that the mosque better have some good security setup though.

I hope the people who are building the mosque know what they are getting themselves into. But it does not really seem this mosque has any ties to an extremist group so I don't really see what the big deal is.

One, I think this is unwise and poor tact on the part of the Mosque.

Two, ultimately its private property. These people have a right to protest and urge it not to happen, but so too do the people trying to build the mosque have a right to build it there if they secure the land.

Three, comparing McVeigh and churches to this is incredibly ignorant and obviously just grasping for straws to try and go "See, see, hypocrites!" McVeigh faith had seemingly very little to do with the bombing, with his motivation instead being the governments intrusion on private individual abilities to worship (indeed, in one case individuals a Christian would probably not care for too greatly as they were essentially a cult) and the government in general. Contrast this with 9/11 which was conducted by people clearly influenced heavily by their religion, who committed suicide for the cause due to their religious beliefs, and who were connected to a group whose purpose and goals are rooted in its religious beliefs. Are these beliefs a very extreme, very foundamentalist, and some say very twisted version of that religion? Sure, but ultimately it was inexplicably tied to the religion, as even their disagreements with our government is rooted in their religious beliefs. So yes, while I would say its incredibly insensitive and tactless to build a Mosque at such a place it is in no way similar to a church going up near the OKC building.
