ADK's criticism of Palin may be harsh but it's also largely accurate. Palin is bringing down the political discourse in this country. It's easy to dismiss a liberal's criticism by saying "Oh you just hate/fear her because she's a woman/is influential/whatever." It's also wrong. Personally, I wouldn't say I "hate" Sarah Palin, she seems like she'd be a nice lady if she were my next door neighbor. What I hate is her actions. Her blindly partisan, factless, lowest-common-denominator speeches delivered in a phony "Oh I'm just a small town person like you" manner. I hate how she fumbles even simple questions and then blames the LIBERAL MEDIA for being unfair with her. I hate how she uses her disabled child as a prop and then screams bloody murder (on facebook) when people call her out on it. I hate how she demanded Rahm Emanuel's resignation for using the word retard in a close-door meeting and the very next day gave Rush Limbaugh a pass for using the same word on the radio. I hate how she does a "bus tour" to promote her book, giving people the idea that she's traveling the country on this bus while actually using a private jet. I hate how she needed to go to four different schools over five years to finish a bachelor's degree in communications, and resigned from her job as a governor to go make millions of dollars selling books and giving speeches, while having the audacity to proclaim herself "not a quitter." I hate how she campaigned on financial responsibility, being proud of her "saying thanks, but no thanks, to the bridge to nowhere" when she actually supported that project until national attention became focused on it. Most of all, I hate the anti-intellectual fervor she stirs up in people, this idea that smart or well-educated people are somehow less qualified for major office, this idea that the president of the freaking United States should be someone "I'd sit down and have a beer with."
I'm glad her political career is over. I don't have to worry that she would end up directly in charge of anything important. Now, she's just a prettier, simpler version of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. Not someone I need to be very concerned about, but it's still fun to poke holes in her statements when she says things that are false or hypocritical.
HEAR! HEAR! Very well said.
