Man Convicted in Newark Murders
NEWARK — A jury on Monday found a Nicaraguan immigrant guilty of the murder of three college-age friends and the attempted murder of a fourth in a Newark schoolyard almost three years ago.
Members of the victims’ families wept silently and clutched each other as the jury foreman read the verdict, guilty on all counts, including robbery, weapons and conspiracy charges.
The defendant, Rodolfo Godinez, 26, said by prosecutors to be a member and recruiter for a dangerous Central American street gang, was the first of six to go on trial in the case.
Mr. Godinez stood impassively as the verdict was read, staring straight ahead with his hands clasped in front of him, not looking at the jury.
