It was a scene Saudi women’s rights activists have dreamt of for years.

When a Saudi religious policeman sauntered about an amusement park in the eastern Saudi Arabian city of Al-Mubarraz looking for unmarried couples illegally socializing, he probably wasn’t expecting much opposition.

But when he approached a young, 20-something couple meandering through the park together, he received an unprecedented whooping.

A member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the Saudi religious police known locally as the Hai’a, asked the couple to confirm their identities and relationship to one another, as it is a crime in Saudi Arabia for unmarried men and women to mix.

For unknown reasons, the young man collapsed upon being questioned by the cop.

According to the Saudi daily Okaz, the woman then allegedly laid into the religious policeman, punching him repeatedly, and leaving him to be taken to the hospital with bruises across his body and face.

Womens' Liberation in Saudi Arabia? Who would have thunk it? And I think this is just the beginning. A think a lot more members of the Virtue Police are going to be wheeled into the hospital, holding their balls, and hopefully singing soprano. And I hope it is a hell of a lot of them, because what they are doing is sticking their high and mighty moralistic noses into things that are none of their damn business.

Hey ladies, kick another one of them in the balls for me.

Article is here.

''Womens' Liberation in Saudi Arabia? Who would have thunk it?''

Actually, the king of Saudi is very open to it, and other forms of progress. Many of Saudis isolated from influence of the outside world citizens are resisting him though. Women are some of the strongest resisters, because of the ''western women are immoral' propaganda they are fed. The last thing they want is to be like us.

I am not surprised that one of those morality police has been thumped. People at some stage will start to get more and more fed up with that level of oppression.

I am not sure I would classify physical violence as a demonstration of womens rights progress though, but is an indication of the level of frustration some in Saudi society are starting to feel. I hope that girl doesnt get her head lobbed off outside the Mosque next Friday, for it.

One small step - and an isolated one. When they start burning bra's in Riyadh and Jiddah by the millions without their husbands escorting them - Saudi Arabia will have arrived. But one's better than nothing... good for her!

She probably wont have her head lobbed off for it, because the cop will be too embarassed to press charges.
