Los Angeles to boycott Arizona over immigration law

The reason I, a former illegal alien, have a problem with this law is because it is unnecessary . Why cant Arizona use existing federal law to do the same thing they are doing now? Why have the same law twice. Why alienate 99% of the hispanic population and many of our african-american and caucasian friends for a bull**** law. Instead repeal this piece of **** law and work within existing law or better yet comprehensive immigration reform and border security. No, Arizona, this is not the way to do it.

Uh, no offense Dude, but your statement proves the law is necessary. You broke the law and apparently got away with it. That's exactly what they're trying to stop.

Think about what you're saying here:

1) The law is completely unconstitutional because it violates my rights by giving the police all sorts of powers they didn't have before

and

2) The law is completely pointless because the police could already do this before.

No, he's saying "If this law had been in place when I was illegal, I and my illegal buddies wouldn't have been able to get away with it, therefore it's wrong, wrong, wrong!"

Illegals have a $1bn yearly impact on Arizona. Let's see what it does to Arizona's slow growing, recession hit economy.

When we don't have to pay the billion dollars in social services any more, that should greatly effect our economy, and for the better.

He is talking about Article 8, section B of the SB1070 (the immigration bill) that states:

Fourth Amendment:

And that differs from the (federal) INS responding to an anonymous tip...how?

What?

Anyone who takes 5 minutes to read the law can understand exactly what it provides for. Absolutely nothing in the law allows a police officer to "summarily deport" anyone. That's not how deportation works. The law allows police officers to detain people with reasonable cause, and if they are unable to produce any identification, they can be turned over to federal officials who make the decisions from there. State officials have never been involved in deportation and this law isn't changing that. This is very basic stuff.

Considering that neither you nor your representative understands anything about the bill, I'm not giving much credence to your collective outrage.
emphasis is mine (bold)

We have never in the history of the USA had to "produce identification" when requested. We are free to not carry papers in this country. If you want to deport illegals, find another way.

Yes, I am aware of a driver having to show a license. Most illegals do not drive.

Not true. If you are an immigrant you are required by federal law to carry your green slip at all times. If you are driving you are required to carry a drivers license. And if you are stopped for some other criminal activity you can bet the first thing that will happen, hispanic or not, is that you will be asked to produce ID.

And all of this ignores the lie of the lefts primary argument...let the federal government (INS) do this...and guess what the INS does...the same damn thing.

No...what this REALLY is is a bunch of people pissed that the LAW which has gone ignored for so long, is about to actually be ENFORCED...by SOMEONE...

GOP Convention decided to use Tampa Bay instead of Phoenix Tampa wins GOP nod to host 2012 convention - The Boston Globe

Why? Even if their decision was not based on the AZ bashing, it looks like they moved to avoid the issue. They claim they moved it to Florida because it is a swing state. Didn't the GOP have it in NYC in 2004. Isn't NYC a Dem strong hold, not a swing state?

I don't know, hmmmm?

Non issue. You even misled in your post. The convention was not "moved". It was never given to Phoenix and then reassigned. Tampa is a good choice. Nice city, swing state... Right choice...

So all you have to do to keep Californians out of your state is pass this law?

Awesome!!

Non-citizens most certainly ARE required to carry their papers with them. And citizens are required to have ID for countless transactions. If you do something illegal, citizen or not, you're going to be required to identify yourself to the officers. Simple as. This is not anything new

I'll be in Phoenix twice as often now just to try to make up for the *****(insert any vulgar noun here) in this city.

I wish that I didn't need an ID when I got a ticket. They could never send me the fine. Oh, that would be beautiful.

It is stupefying how this is being made into something so extreme, when the rest of us have been living by it all of our lives.

That's why 73 percent of Americans support the bill. The other 27 percent must have warrants out for their arrest.

pew poll yesterday:

73% favor requiring folks produce paper proving citizenship status, including 65% of party pelosi

67% back po po's detaining those unable to verify status, 55% of dems

62% want the cops to question anyone THEY THINK is here illegally, going a lot further than AZ's reform which requires probable cause, including 50% of blues

59% back ms brewer's bill, even 45% of the party of big govt

on the issue of immigration the idiot in chief polls a miserable 25% approval, with 54% unimpressed

Broad Approval For New Arizona Immigration Law: Overview - Pew Research Center for the People & the Press

no wonder, he's done SQUAT about the border except THROW STONES at those who've actually taken action

it is what it is

that which wins in los angeles is political suicide across the country

party on, progressives

SO we need laws, to prevent us from enforcing laws to protect legal immigration, and if we enact laws protecting legal immigration, the morons who live in California will boycott AZ?

How retard.

I'm just hoping bankruptcy will knock some sense into voters here.

That's what I have been hoping for, too. We need to get rid of Mayor Papi and the entire city council. Most of the chiefs of police, too. Did you see where the police chiefs were getting on television and reiterating that they would not check immigration status for any reason?

No, when was this?

Any news I get about LA usually comes from John & Ken, but I only get to listen to them about once a week.

Los Angeles is the armpit of the U.S.(sorry jallman). The place is one F-ing freeway, interspersed with strip malls. I left that hellhole 5 days after my 18th birthday. F Los Angeles, it's a smoggy traffic jam, I hate that F-ing place.

Dude, if I wasn't stuck here for work I can assure you that I would not be living here any longer. What I hate about Los Angeles is the people. There is no work ethic whatsoever; quality service is nonexistent, and everyone here has an agenda...to **** you over any way they can. The only friends I have here are all people who came from somewhere else. I think the best thing for the country would be for LA to fall off into the ocean. After I leave, of course.

The story of Los Angeles, and my own pet interpretation of "Hotel California."

This reality was what forced me to stop being such a dip**** in business and learn to hold my own, actually. Of course, it's also made me brutally cynical and distrustful of my fellow man.

The only friends I have here are all people who came from somewhere else.

With only one exception this is identical to my own situation.

That would mean Bakersfield would be the new port city. Do you really want Bakersfield to become the new thriving metropolis? You're fairly new to California so I don't think you understand that it's not defined by places like L.A. or San Francisco, but by Bakersfield. I had to explain that to my out-of-state friend when he was stunned that Prop 8 was passed.

It was on the 11 o clock news about two weeks ago. Basically, Mayor Papi Chulo got on the news and urged protests (peaceful protests) that all but crippled downtown traffic. Then the police chiefs of LA, Long Beach, and Alhambra got on right after him and stated. emphatically, that they would check no immigration status, period.

ROFL...good point!

Are they refusing to investigate other crimes too? Because that would be awesome.

And... save the city a lot of money since cops wouldn't be necessary any longer.

I can't confirm this but I get the distinct impression that unless a quick fine is involved to go into the city coffers, the police here really aren't all that interested in investigating crimes.

We had a neighbor who's apartment was broken into at Christmas time and no officer even came out on the scene. They took the information over the phone and basically said, "well, good luck".
