Los Angeles Gun Buyback Program Takes In Over 2,000 Weapons

    L.A. gun buyback nets 2,000 weapons -- including a grenade | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

It's always interesting when LA does this. The last one was quite successful as well.

LAPD takes in 1,700 weapons in gun buyback program - Los Angeles Times

I'd be curious to see if there is any drop in violent or gun related crime post-buyback.

A ridiculous and ineffectual waste of money; a silly publicity stunt made to assuage naive gun-grabbers.

**Shrug** Again, I'd like to see if it has any impact on gun-related or violent crime.

Also, it's impossible to know what crimes may have been prevented by these drives. I dont see anything wrong with them as long as they are voluntary.

Chicago does this too. Many people bring in guns that haven't worked in years and guns that they purchased for the sole reason of turning it around and selling it to the city for a tidy profit.

BTW, if you've been following what's going on in Chicago in terms of the number of shootings over the past couple of years, it's highly unlikely the program has had much of an impact on the number of gun crimes. People that are going to use a gun for a crime, are unlikely to turn it in to the city, dontcha think?

I do not think the government at any level should engage in gun buyback programs. As US citizens we have the right to keep and bear arms. Your basically letting the government pay you to give up something you have a constitutional right to have. What if the government wanted to be buy bibles, political science books and newspaper from citizens for the sole purpose of trying to get these things out of the hands of citizens?
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

You'd have a point if this were a mandatory program, however it's not. No one is forced to sell any weapons they have.

Not to mention that the government is probably buying them back below market

They eliminated 0.05% of the guns in LA.

These things tend to get old guns out of people's homes, guns that don't function well, or from families who had no need/were not using the firearms. In essence, it does not get the guns which matter; those in the hands of criminals. The only thing this really does is to encourage the poor to disarm.
