Neanderthals mated with some modern humans after all and left their imprint in the human genome, a team of biologists has reported in the first detailed analysis of the Neanderthal genetic sequence.

The biologists, led by Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have been slowly reconstructing the genome of Neanderthals, the stocky hunters that dominated Europe until 30,000 years ago, by extracting the fragments of DNA that still exist in their fossil bones. Just last year, when the biologists first announced that they had decoded the Neanderthal genome, they reported no significant evidence of interbreeding.

So Philly fans bred with humans. Gross but not unheard of :D

An interesting read and hopefully non partisan. :)

Isn't that how the USSR got its women track athletes?

Anyone want to start a pool on when we'll start to see the neanderthal porn?

I always knew there was SOMETHING about Barbara Bush.....

NOTE: This post was so easy, crass, juvenile, and tasteless, that even a caveman could post it. LOL.

I know who would be the most intense partner.

This doesn't surprise me, considering Neanderthals were fully human ;)

yeah they even star in silly insurance commercials

We humans have a long history of sticking our dicks into things, other humans, animals, inanimate objects. I think its no surprise they were doing the same with proto-humans, its less of a stretch than a animal.

Shoot. I thought we finally figured out where Philly fans came from

Of course! How else do you explain liberals?

I guess that ideology could explain origins. Liberals are the result of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution, mutations and interbreeding with other humanoids. Conservatives were magically conjured up by a televangelist one Sunday morning in 1972. :D

But but I thought that humans were only like 10000 years old and that Jesus rode dinosaurs....

Actually, there's some argument as to whether they were a subspecies of humanity (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) or whether they were a separate species altogether (Homo neanderthalensis).

They discovered the ancestors of modern liberals. Just kidding guys, don't get all offended.

I hope I didn't spoil the non partisanshipness of this thread.

I wonder if any of them knew Jesus. I will have to check out a textbook at a library here in Texas to find out.

well, if they interbred, they'd likely be a subspecies

Maybe my joke was closer to the truth than I thought. ;)

You mean if they interbred and produced viable, fertile offspring, as the article suggests. Rural people interbreed with their sheep all the time, but sheep aren't a subspecies of rural people... I don't think. There can be no doubt that neanderthals mated with cro mags. It's just a question of how often, whether they had offspring, and whether those offspring's progeny survived and passed on their genes.

Thought text books were banned in Texas and only a rock with a chisel was a valid form of righting tool...

While I wish they would leave the union, they'd probably just take over the union a few years later anyway.

interbred denotes breeding, hence the interbred, what rural people do with sheep is not breeding, just casual sex

One of cartoonist Gary Larson's more famous cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a blonde human hair on the other and inquires, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?" The Jane Goodall Institute thought this was in bad taste, and had their lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate, in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied, by Goodall herself, who revealed that she found the cartoon amusing.[23] Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon go to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall wrote a preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the "Jane Goodall Tramp" controversy.[24] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behavior of humans and animals. In 1988, Larson visited Gombe.
