Signs of Neanderthals Mating With Humans

You're technically correct. For some reason I thought interbred only meant sex and didn't necessarily mean offspring was produced. Though if they produced sterile offspring it would still be interbreeding but would not indicate subspecies status.

Wow, people twisted my comment to make it personal attacks at others. The maturity level is just off the charts. Liberals and conservatives are two separate ideologies within the human species ;) If anything descended from neanderthals it would be hyper partisans from both sides :mrgreen:

The program I heard yesterday on NPR said that 3-4% of European and Middle Eastern humans have neanderthal DNA. This intermixing occured after the exodus of humans from Africa.

The Neanderthals were not unintelligent, despite the fact that they have unusual brow ridges by our standards. Their cranial capacity was actually larger than ours. I've read that some scientists believe that their vocal abilities were limited, however, making sophisticated language a difficulty for them. Some theorize that they relied on sign language heavily.

Most likely this intermixing was a result of rape of Cro-Magnon females, I would suspect. I'm sure some of that went on.

Here's more specifics. It's thought that non-African humans carry 1-4% of Neanderthal genome. The transfer of this genetic material was one-way. So, no Cro-Magnon dudes were taking Neanderthal wives in some inter-species, cross-cultural love story. But, Neanderthal dudes were impregnating Cro-magnon chicks, most likely by force.

Researchers found that sequenced human genomes from one San from southern Africa, one Yoruba from West Africa, one Papua New Guinean, one Han Chinese and one French person shared 1 to 4 percent common genomic material with Neanderthals, the result of these people's ancient ancestors interbreeding with the close relative. The genes appear to offer no benefit and be randomly placed. Additionally the transfer appears one way, from Neanderthals to humans.

My guess is that they very likely did interbreed, probably quite often, but that the offspring was most likely sterile--unable to pass on the mixture of genes. like mules.

The biologists, led by Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have been slowly reconstructing the genome of Neanderthals, the stocky hunters that dominated Europe until 30,000 years ago, by extracting the fragments of DNA that still exist in their fossil bones. Just last year, when the biologists first announced that they had decoded the Neanderthal genome, they reported no significant evidence of interbreeding.

So Philly fans bred with humans. Gross but not unheard of :D
