Students Wearing American Flag Shirts Sent Home

Students Wearing American Flag Shirts Sent Home | NBC Bay Area

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing t-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the Vice Principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag t-shirts inside-out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.

But to many Mexican American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

As for an apology, the boys and their families say, "fat chance."

This is sick, this principle should be fired, and the chicanos who are all but hurt about Americans wearing the American flag should STFU and get a life or repatriate to that dump of a country they came from.

An excellent example of why Arizona's 2nd legislation is such a good idea - this situation wouldn't have happened there.

I think it's egregious that we now live in a country where we're encouraged by our own government-employees to be shamed by our stars and stripes.

I would NEVER have a problem with anyone displaying the colors or flag of their country on any of our holidays. It wouldn't occur to me to be offended.

If the American flag offends them so much, perhaps they should move back to mexico.

BTW... "cinco de mayo" is a crock holiday, its only mildy celebrated in the small state of puebla Mexico and at chili's, taco bell, and chevy's fresh mex, so we gringos buy fake mexican food and bottom shelf watered down margarhitas.

Yes, funny, isn't' it - that they're offended by an American-pushed thought on 'their holiday'

I agree that this is ridiculous, but has there been a history of ethnic conflict on the school campus? The boys admittedly were wearing the shirt to get a rise out of Latino students and potentially start a conflict.

However, the principal needs to take a class on dress code do's and don'ts.

What's really hilarious, when you think about it, would be for some "French-American" students to protest the celebration of Cinco de Mayo because it hurts their feeling the Mexicans bragging about killing their ancestors. That would be fun to watch some school administrator figure out the PC correct line on that one.

And BTW, speaking of, Cinco De Mayo really... is an insult to Mexico. They're PROUD they kicked France's ass once? Really, that's worthy of a holiday?? We won WWII and didn't bother to make it a Holiday.

And to stay completely on topic, I hope those kids parents sue the school for violating their kids 1st amendment rights.

Mexican Independence Day is actually on September 16. That's typically a bigger holiday in Mexico and amongst Mexicans in the U.S. Cinco de Mayo is kind of like St. Patrick's day...an big deal in the U.S., not so much of a big deal elsewhere.

Liberals prove time and time and time again that they are anti-American.

sitting at a table during brunch break

They get a BRUNCH BREAK. Friggen whimps should be kicked out just for that not their t shirts.

Perhaps that is the reason, but don't you find it the least bit pathetic that these Latino's (in America) were pissed off about other American's displaying the American flag?

Just because someone is celebrating Cinco de Mayo in America, does not mean that everyone else cannot celebrate being an American by displaying the American flag.

If the UK had a holiday for everytime we kicked france's ass we would never get to work.

Yep, because ALL liberals support the action of this principal

Further - if these students wore the flag purely to start a fight then everyone else is a maximus dorkus (as my kids would say) for falling into their trap.

I stand by what I say. It's only liberals who pull this crap.

I was in Mexico last year from April through June. Come May 5th, not a damn word was mentioned regarding Cinco de Mayo. I was disappointed, since I kind of expected this huge celebration. Kind of eye opening to see that the vast majority don't celebrate it in the slightest.

It's hyphenated "Americans" demanding that we cater to them. I'm cool with having mexican food and some decorations about, an excuse to discuss Mexico and it's history...

But if you want to CELEBRATE a Mexican Holiday... Go to F'in Mexico.

 did you order fajitas too gringo? :ssst:

If you can't appropriately wear a symbol of America anywhere in the US for any reason, then your 1st Amend rights are being violated.

I find it totally pathetic. That's why I stated that the principal needs to take a class on how to handle dress code issues. However, I'm also trying to understand his/her thinking on the subject.

Then the issue is...why aren't Latino parents teaching their kids to ignore stupid-heads? This is an important skill in America.

You see it all the time on forums, too, people who've never learned to ignore stupidity and feel that they have to rise to the bait everytime someone drops it in the water.

 did you order fajitas too gringo? :ssst:

Of course I did, they were on many menus! There was a place we went to frequently because it was close. And they had AWESOME fajitas. They made the tortillas right there in front of us in a stone oven and brought a massive platter of beef, pork, chicken, and shrimp, onions, peppers, beans, pico de gallo, and a **** ton of other sauces. More than the two of us could eat and all for about $5.

I did learn that tacos in Mexico and tacos here are two VERY different things. Note: Tacos there are ****loads better once you get past the fact that they're not what *we* would call tacos.

Oh, and there's no chili. ANYWHERE.

Basically, I learned the vast difference between American Mexican food and actual Mexican food. (as well as the difference between American strip clubs and Mexican strip clubs. LOL)

i fail to see any connection between the american flag and the mexican celebration of a battle, the two are not related in any way.

You can find them in the U.S. if you know where to look. Anyplace that has "taqueria" may serve actual tacos.

mmmm....carnitas tacos and tacos carne asada. Mmmmmmmmm.

There is chili, but it's not made with ground beef. Chili verde is a mexican pork stew cooked with green (usually anaheim) chilis. delicious.

Real Mexican food is about 10,000 times better than Americanized versions. And Mexican strip clubs have donkeys.
