Nearly 2 million residents of Greater Boston lost their supply of clean drinking water when a huge pipe abruptly burst yesterday, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency and to impose a sweeping order for homeowners and businesses to boil the untreated water now flowing from their taps.

Governor Deval Patrick said residents in Boston and 29 other communities east of Weston should boil water for at least a minute before drinking it to avoid the risk of getting sick. He also asked bottled water companies and the National Guard to help make clean water available to residents in the affected communities.

Boston's main water supply is gone, for a little while, at least. Which tells me that our infrastructure, some of it very old, is beginning to break down. Instead of bailing out banksters, why doesn't our government use stimulus money to upgrade infrastructure? It will not only modernize some things that really need modernizing, but would create jobs too. Let the banksters deal with their own mess, that they created. They don't need to be on the government welfare tit.

To answer your question, we actually have done quite a bit of infrastructure work with the stimulus money. Your guys complained about that too.
 
First they need to fix the f***ing water line. It is a HUGE pain in the ass right now. After that people can argue who is to blame and why a main waterline even broke. Seriously Boston you are disappointing right now.

edit: Although this event did work into our prank last night fairly well.

I heard on the news on the way home last night that this particular water pipe was relatively new. This tells me that newer stuff is made like crap, and that municipalities shouldn't give contracts to fly by night companies. I'd like to know more about what company contracted to put in that particular pipe.

In any case, there should have been a better inspection process. Is there an inspector on the take? There's probably some corrupt officials involved with this disaster.

Speaking of old infrastructure... We REALLY need to fix up the interstate system. Stop bailing out companies and pushing money into partisan groups and spend it on the people. The interstates need repaired and widened, state governments also need to work on utilities.

Oh the city has already said that after the pipeline is fixed they are going to look into what the hell happened. I imagine the mayor is also pretty pissed because a lot of money has gone into upgrading the infrastructure recently. And so they are probably worrying that other places maybe at risk too.

But in the city's defense they have been pretty on the ball about this whole thing. They keep everyone well informed (six emails, five texts, and two phone calls from BU about what they city has said) and they have asked businesses to stay open later so they can sell bottle water to people that want it.
 
I wonder if the lowest bidder in this project was buying Chinese made steel? I wouldn't be at all surprised...

MWRA Water Main Break Triggers State Of Emergency - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston


The MWRA said the leak was in a relatively new, 10-foot steel water pipe buried 12 feet underground in Weston, a community west of Boston. The main connects the Quabbin Reservoir to MWRA-supplied communities surrounding Boston. At one point, 8 million gallons of water an hour was pouring into the Charles River and 38 communities were affected. Many came off the MWRA list of affected communities, however, when they switched to local water sources.


"It's a very substantial break in a very large pipe," Lasky said, advising residents in the affected communities to conserve water and avoid unnecessary activities such as car washing and lawn watering.

Lasky said the custom-made water main was only six or seven years old and it was not immediately clear what caused it to rupture sometime between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Bostonians need to come to Debate Politics to find out something that the guy next door can tell them, that the local news is covering, that the National News is covering?

LOL, ok... So someone can actually live in Boston, not interact with anyone except online? Never go to the supermarket, pass by a news stand, but your only source of information is Debate Politics? :rofl

Actually they would have to never leave their house/apartment because there are signs everywhere about not drinking water.
