Are you talking about a physical thrashing (beating) or one consisting of exercise. When I was in basic (Coast Guard), physical contact between CC and recruit (except incidental on the basketball court during rec time, for example) was strictly forbidden. We did have mates screw up, and with the exception of the times we had to hold our piece (an old M-1) for an hour, the physical aspect just wasn't a big deal to me.

Why do people believe in this idea that the one meal kids get at school is going to make all the difference to obesity.

This is they same crap Jamie oliver ( i would like to apologise on behalf of the UK for him preaching too Americans now) goes on about.

Obesity rates in the US have surged over the last year, according to one report .
The Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found adult obesity rates rose in 23 of the 50 states, but fell in none.
Then being in the military should be the perfect solution.
In boot camp one's diet is strictly controlled, exercise is heavily regimented and there's no such thing as a soda or candy bar.
For those with weight related disorders to which weight-loss is a common solution to their problem then that disorder shouldn't bar their admittance, it should bar them a passing if they go through boot camp, lose weight, and continue to have symptoms.

By joining in the teens or 20's as most soldiers do the military takes on the role of weight-loss guidance counselor and can intervene before health problems are absolutely likely.

while in the military ones diet and health are under strict scrutiny - you cannot become a fat lazy slob. . . and those that do actually face the possibilty of being restricted or booted out.

Mostly a physical thrashing, but physical contact from the D.I. did occur, along with other usual punishments, nothing life threatening though. Although I will say in my day 1978, this style of training was on it's way out. I do not hold any ill will, as a matter of fact I benefited over all in my USMC hitch and have no regrets.

I was in the Coast Guard and did basic in 1990. No physical contact was allowed (again, except for the incidental contact I mentioned earlier). They could still make you run and hold your piece -- things that many had difficulty with.

I would actually support running basic training like programs for clearly obese high school students -- not enforced, but strongly encouraged.

If true, than Australia is having serious problems. Last time I was in the U.S. (last summer), I went to the beach with my wife and kids. Other than my wife (who is Taiwanese), there was only one or two other women on the beach who had any business in swimwear. The rest weighed more than I do... it was pretty disgusting to behold...

Re: Fat people huge security risk to the US

Kids don't want to be fat. Contrary to popular belief, they do care.
They get picked on by their peers, much like too-skinny kids do.
Kids want to be fit and strong and fast and good at physical pursuits.
Those are all kid-status symbols. Being able to run fast and do chin-ups and climb that rope in gym is the kid equivalent of owning a Lamborghini.

Most kids don't really get that there's a very direct cause and effect relationship between eating too much junk food and being obese.
They only need to be made to understand it, and empowered to take control of their own health and fitness.
The connection between what we eat and how we look is often murky, mystical and obscure, to children.
We need to help them realize that it's not a myth, and it's not rocket science.
Eat moderate healthy meals, get lots of physical activity, and you will be fit, strong, and healthy. Very quickly, too. Especially when you're a kid, your metabolism works like a fine-tuned machine.
Eat junk food and sit around on your ass, and you will be fat, weak, unhealthy, and unpopular.
Showing kids the direct connection- and the fact that they and only they have the power to decide how they will look- will cause them to make good choices. I'm positive of it.
