BEIJING – China said Friday that a Chinese diplomat in the U.S. was beaten and injured by Houston police and urged an investigation to ensure diplomatic practices are not violated.

The U.S. State Department was taking the matter very seriously and findings of the investigation would be shared with China "as soon as appropriate," said Susan Stevenson, spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

She referred further questions to Houston police, which did not immediately return calls seeking comment Friday morning.

Ouch. The Houston Police Department is well known for beating people who even look crosseyed at them, and there have been investigations in the past, one which was triggered after 2 Houston Police officers handcuffed a "Mexican", and then threw him into Buffalo Bayou while saying "Let's see if this wetback can swim". The "Mexican" drowned, and it turned out that he was a US citizen, after all.

So, the City of Houston gets yet another black eye, courtesy of the Police Department. You would think that, with such a brutal police department, the crime rate here would be way down, but instead, it is way up. Go figure.

Wait....our cops....needlessly beating people? No, never! They don't do anything wrong, especially acting violent and aggressive towards the very people they're supposed to serve and protect.

Pre judging the police as being the bad guy before you know all the facts? No never! You would never do that would you?

The government is always considered guilty. It is only the individual who is innocent until proven guilty. All arms of the government, particularly it's militant arms, must be regarded with suspicion. Plus, we've seen plenty and plenty of times cops abusing power and people. So it's not a stretch.

So why is this a black eye again? Message sent was simple: Don't eff with cops in Texas - they don't give a hoot who you are.

I got the message and next time I'm going to Austin or DFW, I think I'll be on my best behavior.

No, I think it is the cops who are about to learn a lesson. This ain't Lethal Weapon 2 here. They're going to find out what happens when you beat up the wrong folk. Invoking the State Department, they're in for a world of hurt. Maybe a cop will even be held accountable to his actions for once....maybe.

Jesus and I thought Boston cops were bad. This won't end well for them though. The State Department will most likely be on their asses about this.

Justifying police brutality...how lame of you.

Cops aren't special; they don't deserve special treatment; they're citizens just like the rest of us. Licking their boots because they have a badge and a uniform is just nonthinking conformist crap.

LA county has the worst cops, by far. It's not even close.

LOL Wow. You are really out there dude.

No matter what, the cops are always guilty in your mind? Is there an anarchist political leaning?

And we've seen plenty of "victims" lie about their treatment so its not a stretch.

Well I have never seen how LA cops handle things, just jokes and such. I have however seen how BPD handles things and that is why I used them. And even then most of the time it is just the cops not being able to calm down people at parades and stuff.

Still these cops are going to get screwed over.

My God that AP writer couldn't have been more dishonest in his title:

Houston police tried to stop a car that was missing a license plate, CBS News reported. When the car didn't stop, they pursued it into a garage. Police handcuffed and arrested the driver, injuring him, the report said. CBS News identified the official as Ben Ren Yu. The Houston consulate website lists a deputy consul-general, Yu Boren.

And we still have people running around screaming the cops are guilty when this guy didn't have a license plate and ran from the cops.

We have no idea if he added resisting arrest to that list of broken laws.

Did you guys even bother to read what this guy did?

There are different levels of crime, and when the police arrest the most violent criminals they are scared of them. But when dealing with petty criminals like the majority of time they are dealing with. They are often abusive and hostile. So it doesn't matter because the police are often bullies who don't want to mess with someone capable of defending themselves. And being on your best behavior won't save you.

Houston cops have their moments, that's for sure. But compared to New Orleans, L.A. or N.Y.C., they are cream puffs.

Hell, New Orleans are PROUD of their ass whuppin' cops and I don't expect there to be any change there in our lifetimes.

Hell, might as well just up and declare martial law. That'll show 'em!

From the Article:

Officials in China's Foreign Ministry released a statement Friday saying police harassed and beat a deputy consul-general while he was driving to the consulate. The statement said a family member also was involved, but did not say if that person was injured.

So - why didn't this official stop driving when flagged by police and simply state who he was?
Instead, the driver drove on - and into a parking garage. . . there was nothing to give sign of who this person was. . . not sure about in other countries but in the US that's not taken as a sign of being granted immunity.

How was Boran injured? We don't quite know - the Chinese government has alleged a beating but this has yet to be confirmed.

What would have happened to someone in China if they were flagged but didn't pull over?

You are asking people who obviously live on emotion to actually examine the facts.

Its a tall order

The cops would have beat the **** out of them.

Of course, I did. First of all, they arrested the diplomat in Chinese soil, where they had no business being. They have absolutely no authority there. Secondly, hardly a week goes by where there is not a story about Houston Police being investigated for beating someone who was not attempting to resist arrest. There was yet another case of it just a couple of days ago, and it was caught on a security camera. The cops are typcially put on administrative leave, while they attempt to cover up the incident. It won't happen on the one a couple of days ago, though, because the mother is raising holy hell, and Quanell X is getting her a lawyer, and holding press conferences. Her son is going to be a rich man. Beatings are par for the course here.

Government is guilty until proven innocent, the individual is innocent until proven guilty. You can't take abuse of power and sovereignty lightly, which is why that's how it was meant to be. The government was never a force to be trusted or believed.

And we've seen plenty of "victims" lie about their treatment so its not a stretch.

Doesn't matter, presumption of innocence is on the individual, not the militaristic branches of the government. The cops should be suspended with pay till an investigation is finished at which point prosecution/further punishment can be issued if necessary.

Yes, I know - I'm guilty of asking adults to be mature and insightful while pondering the inner-workings of their world.

I'm so ****ed.

Maybe, but then the United States would have demanded something be done, especially if the beating was at the embassy, which is considered US soil.

Yes - so at that I'm not balking.

Well yeah, but that's a different story. Chinese cops treat foreigners with kid gloves most of the time.
